Year 12 Music Soirée

Last week I took the opportunity to go to the Year 12 Music Soirée in the Duffy Centre. Our Year 12 students performed for their families, friends, and staff in what was a celebration of their musical talents, which also served as an Assessment Task.

While there are only a small number of students in this course, we were taken on a musical journey through the string, brass, and woodwind families. It was a special evening where our young men showed off their many talents. Being considered an academic goes so much further than just putting pen to paper. At the Soiree, Isaac, Markus, and Zachary performed on the alto saxophone, presenting works by both Australian and American artists. We must thank Miss Nikki Zhong who has joined our Music teaching staff this year, for accompanying Zachary in his performance of ‘Misty’.

We also enjoyed the talents of Vaughn on the electric guitar who performed a piece from the late Ozzy Osbourne, as well as Noah, who took the audience on a musical journey on the trumpet with ‘Fly Now’, better known as the iconic theme song from the Rocky movies. These young men have put in countless hours over the years perfecting their skills to take the listener on a classic journey where you can feel the emotion in each of their pieces. I am sure they will continue to work hard over the remainder of their course, further developing and refining their skills in preparation for the performance of their final pieces later in the year for the HSC markers.

I would also like to acknowledge the amazing work of their teacher Ms De Francesco, who has picked up this class this year. It was great to hear from the students about the impact that she has made in such a short time. I would also like to thank Ms Ovijach who assisted with marking on the night.  Her longstanding passion and dedication to our music students ensure that our young men continue to ‘let their lights shine’.
