Prep B

By La Ree Byrne

What a fabulous Term Two!

The Prep B classroom has been filled with excitement, learning, and lots of new experiences both in and out of the classroom.

In Literacy, we have been exploring new sounds and letters.  We have been revisiting the letters and sounds we learned in Term One and learning new letters/sounds in Term Two and moving forward with new learning of vowels, other letters/sounds and tricky words. We are becoming more confident writers and now have many opportunities throughout the day to write sentences and share our ideas. We know that making mistakes is part of learning and even our teacher models this when writing sentences on the whiteboard. We are all learning together!

In Mathematics, we switched over to being mathematicians! We explored numbers, part-whole, linking this into addition and subtraction and Shape.  We used ten frames, number tracks and drawings to represent our thinking. During the Shape unit we went on a shape hunt around the classroom looking for, circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. We recognised that the television is a rectangle shape and that we sit on circle sit spots, which are on top of carpet squares. We used our imagination to create a picture using cut out shapes. Our artistic brains were turned on, as students created either a city, house, buildings, a robot or rockets.

Our Inquiry unit focused on showing respect to our environment. We experimented with science activities by mixing ingredients and observed the outcome. We had a special visit from a real Scientist who shared many different kid safe chemical experiments. Many of the students enjoyed the magic and colour of the Lava lamp. We investigated the indigenous garden in our school environment and looked at different indigenous plants on the television, back in the classroom. Our highlight was growing our own Pinto beans in a plastic zip bag, observing growth and measuring the length of the stalk throughout the week.

In Wellbeing, we explored friendships, mindfulness, gratitude and global empathy through The Resilience Project. During the Cyber Safety Project, we learnt about being safe online and balancing online use with offline wellbeing. We attended two incursions about Friendology, navigating friendships and Brainstorm Production, to learn how to protect ourselves from the hurtful words and actions of others.

In PMP, we practised our catching, throwing, balancing, rolling, skipping, and hula hooping. These sessions help us to build motor skills, resilience, and confidence as well as, having lots of laughter along the way.

Each week, we have been perfecting walking silently in a line to the library. We show respect by not disturbing the Year One students doing their learning in their classrooms, the office staff, and of course, by showing Mr Catalano what wonderful role models we are. At the library, we enjoy seeing Sabrina and Kathryn, and always look forward to choosing a special book to take home and share with our families.

We also celebrated both Pyjama Day, arriving to school in our PJs and Funky Feet Day, where we wore odd and colourful shoes and socks. This was not only lots of fun but also raised money to support others in need.

Finally, we loved sharing our learning with our family at the Student Led Conferences. We chose our own pieces of learning to share and proudly discussed the proud pieces of learning.

It has been such a busy, fun, and rewarding Term Two. We can’t wait to see what more learning adventures await us in Term Three, after the Winter holiday break.
