Deakin University Experience Day

On Wednesday 26th November, students from the college attended the Deakin University Experience Day, joining regional schools for an engaging and hands-on introduction to university life. Representatives from Deakin, Monash, La Trobe, Swinburne  and Australian Catholic Universities welcomed students and guided them through a range of activities showcasing different areas of study.

One highlight was a session led by La Trobe University, in which students learned about current research into growing plants in space. After discovering the challenges of sustaining life in space, students had the opportunity to design and create their own “space plant.”

Lakes Entrance students also collaborated with Swinburne University students to create short videos, gaining insight into digital media production. In a Mathematics workshop, students took part in an interactive activity demonstrating how herd immunity works, linking real-world concepts to mathematical thinking.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the Deakin Experience Day, valuing the chance to explore a university campus, participate in hands-on activities and broaden their understanding of future study and career options.

A Message from Vanessa....

As the Career Support Officer at Lakes Entrance Secondary College, I am committed to supporting students as they explore their strengths, develop their skills, and prepare for life beyond the classroom. I am passionate about helping young people navigate their future pathways whether they are considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, or heading straight into the workforce.

This year, I have had the privilege of assisting students with the development of resumes, cover letters, job applications, and career pathway conversations. I work closely with students to help them develop confidence in their abilities and to make informed decisions.

My role includes guiding students through the process of contacting employers, confirming their placements, completing the required paperwork, and following up with businesses to ensure meaningful and safe experiences in the workplace. I take pride in building strong partnerships with local businesses to provide opportunities for our students to complete work experience and provide valuable insights into what to expect in the world of work.

I am deeply passionate about continuing to grow the Careers and Pathways program at Lakes Entrance Secondary College and dedicated to ensuring every student feels empowered, informed and confident in making decisions about their future.
