Supporting All Students at Lakes Entrance Secondary College – Celebrating Inclusion

This week at our school we are proud to reflect on the spirit of the International Day of People with Disability held on December 3rd. It is a chance to acknowledge the diverse strengths and needs of our school community, and to celebrate the ways we all work together so every student feels supported, included, and valued.

At Lakes Entrance Secondary College, supporting students with disability and diverse learning needs isn’t just about meeting requirements, it is about doing everything we can to help every student thrive.

Here’s how we make that happen:

· We develop Individual Learning Plans, working closely with students, families, and teachers to set meaningful learning goals tailored to each student’s strengths.

· Our dedicated Education Support staff provide extra help and encouragement in the classroom, helping students feel confident and supported.

· We offer a range of sensory tools and flexible breaks, such as noise-cancelling headphones or fidget tools, and allow students to take breaks when they need them, so they can stay calm, focused, and ready to learn.

· Visual supports like schedules, prompt cards, and clear, step-by-step instructions help students understand routines and expectations.

· When needed, we use assistive technology, from iPads and speech-to-text programs to audio books, giving students alternative ways to learn and express themselves.

· We collaborate regularly with external specialists, like speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists, to ensure each child receives the right support.

· We value smooth transitions: our Transition Leader and Disability Inclusion team work closely with families, primary schools and support services o ensure upcoming students feel prepared for high school.

· Our Wellbeing team provide students with regular check-ins and mentoring and support for building resilience and healthy peer relationships.

· Finally, and importantly, we keep our school community inclusive: all events, excursions and activities are planned so every student can participate meaningfully.

Recently, we launched our new Inclusion Hub, a welcoming, calm space where students can de-escalate, take a break, or work quietly in a supportive environment. It also serves as a flexible break-out space for small-group learning, sensory regulation, or focused support. This is a place where students can regroup, feel safe, and return to class when they are ready.

This modern approach to inclusion - rooted in respect, collaboration and care - reflects the values celebrated by the International Day of People with Disability.

At Lakes Entrance Secondary College, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment that honours their uniqueness, supports their growth, and helps them shine.

We thank our school community, students, families, and staf for being part of this journey. Together, we make our school a stronger, more inclusive environment.
