Sleep & Wellbeing - Why Sleep Matters:
Getting enough good-quality sleep helps us learn, concentrate, manage their emotions, regulate their behaviour and have the energy we need for the day. When children are tired, it doesn't always look like sleepiness. They may become more irritable, emotional, restless, easily frustrated or have difficulty concentrating.
Improving Our Sleep Hygiene:
Sleep hygiene is a set of healthy habits, behaviors, and environmental adjustments that you can use to help you fall asleep easily and sleep well through the night. Some simple things you can do include:
- Set technology boundaries – Agree on clear, age-appropriate limits for device use at night.
- Keep devices out of bedrooms – Use an alarm clock instead of a phone where possible.
- Create a wind-down routine – Swap screens for calm activities, such as reading, in the hour before bed.
- Reduce bright light – Dim screens and use night-mode settings if screens are used in the evening.
- Explain why sleep matters – Help children understand how poor sleep can affect mood, learning and wellbeing.
- Model healthy habits – Make sleep and technology boundaries a whole-family effort.
There is no such thing as a perfect bedtime routine. Life happens, routines change and some children find sleep much easier than others. The goal is to create predictable, calming habits that support your child's wellbeing, not another thing for families to feel they are getting wrong. If you're noticing ongoing difficulties with your child's sleep, it can be worth having a conversation with your GP or health professional.
