Message from the International Coordinator and WELC Coordinator 

WELC Update

We are halfway through Term 3 and it’s been a very busy term! We welcomed 19 new students at the start of term and currently have 54 students in 4 classes. Students are working hard on improving their English through a variety of subjects including Maths, Science, Global Literacy, Sport, IT and our Electives (Art, Drama, PE and Cooking).

WELC students all attended the Athletics Sports Day with most students participating in an event which was lovely to see! Many students placed in the top three and received a ribbon. We congratulate all students who participated on the day – well done!

This term our Transition Coordinator, Ms Tetoros, has also been working closely with students who plan to attend Westall Secondary College next year and helping them choose their subject selections. There will be follow-up interviews with parents and students, for those students who are going into Year 11 next year. This is an important meeting where the school can confirm that families support choices the students have made.

Our new students are attending swimming lessons at Monash University each week. They are learning valuable skills to help keep themselves safe around water. We encourage all students to continue to develop these important skills at local swimming lessons if possible.

On Thursday 20 August, WELC will hold their Parent Teacher Interviews. We encourage all families and students to attend. We look forward to this opportunity to speak with families and give Progress reports and suggestions to help students improve further. 

South East Community Links came to WELC to introduce themselves and the programs they run. Every Wednesday after school they will be at the Westall Hub running activities. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to enjoy free activities, meet new people and practise their English.

WELC Art Elective

Our talented art students used the grid method to paint vibrant bowls of fruit. They carefully drew a bigger version of their reference image on grid paper, then finished their colourful pieces with watercolor paint.

These artworks are currently on display in A Block, directly outside the WELC staffroom—be sure to stop by and take a look!

International Student Program Term 3

The first half of Term 3 has been filled with opportunities for our international students to relax, connect and celebrate together.

Year 12 Wellness Workshops

To support our Year 12 students during their final year of school, we launched our fortnightly Year 12 Wellness Workshops, providing students with a chance to take a break from their studies, recharge and look after their wellbeing.

In Week 2, students created their own self-care kits, filling them with a variety of thoughtful goodies to help them unwind during the busy term. The workshop was followed by a delicious lunch, giving everyone the opportunity to chat, laugh and enjoy each other's company.

In Week 4, students participated in a special animal therapy incursion. Spending time with the friendly animals brought plenty of smiles and laughter, while also helping students relax and reduce stress during this important stage of the school year.

We look forward to continuing these workshops throughout the semester as we support our Year 12 students on their journey towards their final exams.

Birthday Celebrations

We also celebrated our June and July birthdays with two wonderful birthday parties held in the International Student Centre.

One of the highlights of our birthday celebrations is that each birthday student is invited to bring up to two friends, whether they are local or international students. This creates a welcoming environment where students can strengthen friendships across different cultures and year levels.

Happy Birthday once again to all of our June and July birthday students! We hope you had a fantastic celebration, and we look forward to many more memorable moments together throughout the year.

Holiday Travel Reminder 

International students are required to attend school for the full term, which means you cannot leave early or return late. Please plan carefully and submit your travel details to the school for approval before finalising any bookings.

If you are considering travel arrangements, please contact the International Student Program team early to discuss your plans and ensure compliance with attendance requirements.
