Year 3 - Year 6 Updates

Year 3

It has been a busy and exciting fortnight of learning in Year 3. In Literacy, we have been exploring a variety of persuasive devices and practising how to use them effectively to strengthen our persuasive writing. We have also continued reading The One and Only Ivan, which has sparked some interesting discussions and reflections.

In Mathematics, we have completed our unit on Data and Location and have now begun exploring Probability. The students have enjoyed investigating chance and making predictions about the likelihood of different events occurring.

We also loved heading down to the Stella Garden, where we planted a variety of fruits and vegetables. We are very excited to watch them grow and, of course, can’t wait to enjoy what we have planted.

In Religion, we are continuing to learn about the life of Mary and are developing our understanding of the Rosary in greater detail.

This term, we have been researching Australian Icons and exploring what it means to be Australian. The students have discovered many interesting facts and have enjoyed developing a deeper understanding of Australia’s people, places, symbols and culture.

Year 4

Year 4 have had a wonderful start to Term 4 and have been busy exploring a range of exciting learning experiences. In Literacy, we have been enjoying our class novel, His Name Was Walter, using the story to explore character development, descriptive language and the features of engaging narratives. Alongside our novel study, we have been investigating myths and legends, learning about their common features, including heroes, magical objects, mythical creatures and adventurous quests. Students have been developing their own imaginative narratives by creating unique heroes, describing enchanted objects and mysterious settings, and using powerful adjectives, verbs and similes to bring mythical beasts to life.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring time, including converting between seconds, minutes and hours, calculating elapsed time and interpreting timetables. Students particularly enjoyed creating their own clocks to develop their understanding of time and applying their skills to practical problems.

In Religious Education, we have commenced our unit God, Religion and Life, exploring God's love and the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in our relationships with others.

We have also begun Bike Education, which the students have been thoroughly enjoying as they develop their cycling skills, confidence and understanding of road and bicycle safety.

Last week, we celebrated the opening of our Kitchen Garden, and Year 4 are excited to get involved! Students are looking forward to getting their hands dirty, developing their gardening skills and taking responsibility for caring for the plants. We are also eager to make use of this wonderful outdoor learning space by taking some of our lessons outside and connecting classroom learning with hands-on experiences in nature.

Looking ahead, Year 4 are looking forward to commemorating Remembrance Day and participating in our upcoming Mini Vinnies Purple Day Liturgy, providing meaningful opportunities to reflect on remembrance, compassion and our responsibility to care for others.

Year 5

Over the past fortnight, Year 5 students have been busy engaging in a range of exciting learning experiences! In English, we have explored a range of persuasive devices and practised using these to strengthen our persuasive letters and writing. We have also continued reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, exploring themes of friendship, compassion, climate change and the impact of human activity on wildlife and their habitats.

In Mathematics, we have completed our unit on data handling and are now exploring the connections between fractions, decimals and percentages.

In Inquiry, we have continued our Bizarre Bazaar unit, planning and preparing for the Christmas Market on 27 November. We also proudly led last week's assembly, showcasing some creative advertisements to build excitement and anticipation for the upcoming market.

As part of our AIS Problem Solvers Programme, we have collaborated with Year 6 to investigate how sports can be adapted to become more inclusive and accessible for everyone. Students are now preparing group presentations to share their innovative ideas during our next visit from an AIS athlete.

In Bike Education, we have continued building on our cycling skills, tackling more challenging activities involving scanning, signalling and navigating intersections safely.

In Religious Education, we have explored the significance of God in the lives of believers and developed our understanding of the Holy Trinity. We also attended Parish Mass this week and participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Year 6

In Year 6, we have been enjoying the fantasy novel Nevermoor, which has inspired us to explore other fantasy stories and gather creative ideas as we prepare to plan and write our own.

In Mathematics, students have been conducting data investigations, developing suitable questions that meet specific criteria and exploring effective ways to represent and interpret their findings.

Preparations for our Bizarre Bazaar Christmas Market are also well underway! Students have been working collaboratively in groups to develop product ideas, consider potential challenges they may face during production and explore ways to overcome them. They have also been identifying their target audience and thinking creatively about the most effective ways to advertise and promote their products. There is lots of excitement as their ideas begin to take shape!
