Prep - Year 2 Updates

Prep
During Literacy, the Prep students are continuing to actively engage with our Little Learners Love Literacy program and have completed learning all the letters, sounds and heart words from Stages 1- 6. They are now confidently using their letter and word knowledge to independently create short texts to record ideas and events. This week, the students began learning about the vowel digraphs /a/ – ai as in snail and ay as in play. They are learning that ay is found at the end of a word or syllable, while ai is usually found at the beginning or in the middle of a word or syllable.
In Maths, the students are learning about statistics and data. They have been having fun collecting, sorting and comparing information. They are also learning to represent their findings using objects and pictures.
On Monday, we once again welcomed the K2 Room students from GoodStart Kinder into our classroom. The children had a wonderful time playing and learning together! It was lovely to see the gentleness, patience and calm leadership our Prep students demonstrated as they supported the Kinder students throughout their activities.
Year 1
During Mathematics, the Year 1 students have enjoyed exploring the names and features of 2D shapes. They used physical resources to identify and categorise 2D shapes into different groups based on their features.
In Literacy, the students have been learning the two digraphs /ow/ and /ou/, which make the "ow" sound as in cow.
In Writing, the students have focused on boundary punctuation, making sure they use capital letters and full stops appropriately in their sentences.
In Religion, the students are learning about Advent. Through reading scripture, the students have been exploring the meaning of Jesus as the Messiah.
The Year 1 students are looking forward to presenting their assembly to the school community next Friday. |
Year 2
Over the past fortnight, Year 2 students have continued Little Learners Love Literacy, exploring the prefixes mis-, sub- and dis-, as well as the suffixes -ness and -ment. In Writing, we have been learning to use past tense verbs, including was and were, to describe events that have already happened.
In Mathematics, we investigated fractions, practising how to find and represent halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections.
During our Inform and Empower online learning, we explored the importance of being kind online, discussed advertisements we encounter on the internet and considered how these advertisements make us feel. We also thought about who creates advertisements and why they might do so, helping us become more thoughtful and responsible digital citizens.
In Religion, we have continued exploring the Liturgical Calendar and learnt about special celebrations within the Catholic Church. |
