Supporting Every Learner at St Bernard’s
Mutli-Tiered System of Supports
At St Bernard’s, we use a framework called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to help ensure every student receives the support they need to learn and thrive. MTSS focuses on strong teaching and inclusive practices for all students, while also providing additional support when needed. This term, we have begun reviewing and strengthening our universal practices to make sure our classrooms meet the diverse learning needs of every child. By using this approach, we can identify students who may benefit from extra support early and respond in a thoughtful and supportive way.
Equity vs. Equality
In an inclusive school community, we often talk about the difference between equality and equity. Equality means giving every student the same thing, while equity means giving each student the support they need to succeed. As every child learns in their own way, some students may need different strategies, adjustments, or extra support to help them do their best. By focusing on equity, we aim to make sure all students feel included and supported so they can take part in learning on the same basis as their peers and reach their full potential.
