A Celebration of Harmony and Community

What a spectacular week it has been at Mitcham Primary School! The highlight was undoubtedly our Harmony Day evening, an event that truly captured the heart of our community. It was wonderful to see so many families gathered on the green, enjoying each other's company and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures that make our school so unique. The air was filled with excitement as we watched our students perform the cultural dances they had been diligently perfecting during their Footsteps dance lessons over the past few weeks. Seeing the students beam with pride while wearing orange, the colour of Harmony Day, colours from the culture their dances were inspired by, or dressed in beautiful traditional costumes reflecting their own heritage, was a moving reminder of why we celebrate this day.

In a world currently facing times of uncertainty and conflict, the message of Harmony Day, Everyone Belongs, has never been more vital. At Mitcham Primary, we do not just acknowledge our diversity; we embrace it. It is our inclusiveness and the respect we show for one another's backgrounds that make our school community so incredibly special.

Community Spirit in Action

Our FUNdraising team outdid itself once again! A massive thank you Renee, Cara and Leah and to all the volunteers who braved the sausage sizzle; your hard work is directly contributing to the new shade structures we hope to install across the school grounds this year. We also want to shine a spotlight on our students and their incredible Market Stalls. Thanks to their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, they raised nearly $1,000! These funds will be shared between two very worthy causes: Hearing Health Australia, which provides hearing aids to children in disadvantaged and war-torn regions, and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Junior Athletics Carnival

On Monday, the energy was focused on the sporting field for our Prep - Grade 2 Junior Athletics Carnival. This event is designed as a fun, low-pressure introduction to athletics, with a focus on participation and "having a go." The excitement and energy from our youngest students were infectious! A huge thank you to our amazing PE teacher, Laura Ellis, for her meticulous planning, and to our wonderful parents and friends who helped keep the events running smoothly. Well done to all our little athletes for your fantastic spirit!

2026 School Council

This week also marked a milestone with the first meeting of our 2026 School Council. As a Victorian Public Primary School, the School Council plays a critical role in our governance. It is a partnership between parents and staff that helps set the school's long-term vision, oversees the budget, and ensures Mitcham Primary continues to provide the best possible environment for our students to thrive. We look forward to a productive year ahead with our new and returning members.

At Mitcham Primary School, we are proud to celebrate the rich diversity of our community, including the observance of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Marking the arrival of spring, Nowruz is a time of renewal, hope, and togetherness for many families around the world.

We extend our warmest wishes to all members of our community celebrating this special occasion. May the year ahead bring happiness, health, and new beginnings. Celebrating events like Nowruz helps us foster understanding, respect, and a strong sense of belonging within our school.
