Prep News – We’re Off to a Busy Start!
Our Preps have settled in beautifully and are already busy learning so many new things!
In Literacy, we have learned the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n and have been working hard to blend and read simple words. We have also been exploring alliteration, rhyme and syllables, listening carefully to the sounds in words. The students are becoming very confident with our mini whiteboard routine — “chin it, bin it, park it!” — which helps keep our learning organised and focused.
In Mathematics, we have finished our unit on patterns and are now learning about counting and place value using numbers 0–10. We are practising counting forwards and backwards, representing numbers in different ways and building strong number foundations.
In Science, we have been learning about what science is and what scientists do. We have started making careful observations about the world around us and sharing what we notice.
A friendly reminder to please bring your child’s blue reading satchel to school every day so we can continue building strong reading habits together.
We are so proud of how well the Preps have settled into school life.

The Year 1 Teachers
The Year 2 students have continued their strong start to the school year.
In Maths, students have been using their Place Value knowledge to partition and represent 3-digit numbers in various ways. They have been able to demonstrate how to break 100’s and 10’s into smaller values while still representing the same number. Students have started to use addition patterns to identify missing numbers in a sequence. In our measurement unit, students have been using informal units to measure different object correctly around the classroom. They have used this information to then order the objects from shortest to longest.
In Writing, classes have been reading several different books by Bob Graham. Students have been identifying a range of key story elements such as characters, setting and important events. The classes have also developed their comprehension strategies by closely examining the illustrations. Student have looked at the colour, layout and panels used to show mood, character feeling and events that may not be directly stated in the books.
In our Reading/Phonics lessons students have been building their knowledge of high frequency word spellings and develop their letter sound patterns to read and write unfamiliar words. Students are developing their grammatical knowledge by writing simple and compound sentences with appropriate punctuation.
The students are looking forward to all the activities that are still to come in Term 1.
