Year 3

In Grade 3, we have continued reading our class novel ‘Brindabella.’ We have been looking at character traits and messages in the text. We have also been sharing our opinions about the text. We are currently working on increasing our reading stamina and continuing to practise this at home as part of our homework.

In writing, students have been learning to plan and write a narrative with a beginning, middle and end. Students have been focusing on using adjectives in their writing, quotation marks and paragraphs, as well as rereading and editing their work. Students have written some amazing Narratives!

In maths, we have been focusing on place value and probability. We have been learning how to expand numbers, partition and rename numbers. We have also been practising using the ‘less than’ and ‘greater than’ symbols. We know the crocodile always eats the larger number! During our probability unit we have created our own probability continuum as a class and drew events that correspond to the probability term. We have also been looking at the outcomes of various events and conducting chance experiments.

In science, we have been focusing on living, non-living and once living things. We have learnt that all living things can move, grow, reproduce, breathe, respond to the environment and take in nutrients.

In Humanities, we have been focusing on rules and laws, the different levels of government, democracy, groups in the community and volunteering. Students have enjoyed sharing what different groups they are a part of and testing their knowledge about which level government is responsible for various services.

In health, we have been focusing on emotions and resilience. We have been focusing on identifying and describing different emotions. We also read a book called ‘Khawaja.’ Khawaja is an inspirational Australian cricketer who demonstrates great resilience. We have been having discussions about what resilience is and how students can demonstrate resilience.

In sport, we have been playing lots of mini games with our classes. We have learnt some new games, learnt to play fairly and have had lots of FUN!

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the term has in store for us!

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

In Reading, we have been immersing ourselves in the fantasy text “His Name was Walter”. We have loved learning all the different descriptive language and challenging ourselves to make inferences and summaries.

In Writing, we have been refining our craft by using literary devices, dialogue and show don’t tell strategies. We are looking forward to putting all of our skills into our own Narrative!

In Maths, we have been exploring how to round and estimate numbers. We have perfected our skills of regrouping numbers and made these crazy MAB monsters, check them out!

In Science, we have been looking at food chains and life cycles. This week we have been conducting some exciting experiments that look at the producers, consumers and decomposers in our ecosystems. We watched the grass life cycle grow & fruit decompose right in front of our eyes! Check out our results!

Year 5

As we cross the half way mark of term 1, we are proud to report that the year 5 students have settled into their classrooms well, are engaging in lots of learning and have helped create a positive and safe environment.

In Maths, students in year 5 have been working on place value and data. They are learning to demonstrate their understanding of place value on number lines and working with decimal numbers. While in data lessons they have been learning how to collect data, display it on a graph and making clear observations. In Reading, students have been learning how to answer questions on our class text, Boy Overboard.

While in Writing, students have been learning how to create interesting and engaging narratives.

With NAPLAN approaching, we encourage parents to have conversations with students about the importance of NAPLAN, but still ensure their child is feeling relaxed and calm for the experience. NAPLAN begins on Wednesday 11th of March, and finishes on Monday 16th of March.

We look forward to carrying on with the school term and are excited to continue to see our students achieve their learning goals.

Kind regards,
