Places and Our Connections to Them: Our Important Places

This term, our Foundation students are embarking on an exciting journey to explore "Our Important Places", starting with a look at Australia as a whole. Using the classic book Possum Magic as our guide, we will follow Hush’s journey across the states and territories of Australia, identifying major features and creating our own maps of our country. We will also be exploring the world around us through the lens of weather and seasons, specifically looking at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use seasonal calendars to understand the land.

Closer to home, we are incredibly lucky to use our own school grounds as a living classroom. We want our students to be outside, connecting with the landscape and learning how to care for our "common home". We will be mapping our school and sketching our beautiful gardens and our heritage building, Olrig. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn how the land our school sits on has changed over time - from its history and to the community it is today. To bring this history to life, we will explore how families lived "then and now" and even spend time in our school garden.
