Reading 

Our reading program this term is built around several wonderful mentor texts: The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base, Fang Fang’s Chinese New Year by Sally Rippin, The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland, and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems. 

Through these stories, students will learn to understand and respond to fiction and non-fiction texts, retell narratives using grammar story elements, and identify rhyme. We will be exploring how characters invite different emotions from readers - especially that persistent Pigeon!—and we are continuing to build our vocabulary. 

A major part of our daily routine is the UFLI Phonics program. We engage with UFLI every single day to build essential letter-sound connections, helping our students become competent and efficient readers. 

The decodable texts that your child brings home for home learning are specifically chosen because they contain the exact letter sounds we have focused on in class during our UFLI lessons. 

This allows the children to apply their skills with confidence, as they are reading words and sounds they have already become familiar with alongside their teacher.
