Prep News

It has been a very busy two weeks in Prep and we have loved every minute of it! We have continued our investigations into habitats, reading non-fiction texts, writing an information report, learning about time and making clouds in Science! We also had some special visitors on Wednesday that got plenty of love and attention.

“I brought my chicks to Rolling Hills and every prep got to cuddle them. They were very soft and we were very careful.” Annie

Reading & Writing

“I have learnt to read a non-fiction book. I know that it tells us facts, it has photos, headings, index and glossary. I like to read these books.” Angus

“We have been writing an information report. I picked the King Kobra. I wrote about the location of the King Kobra. I drew a labelled diagram of the King Kobra.” Peyton

Maths

“I know that digital clocks tell the time but just show the time by numbers. Analogue clocks use hands to point at the numbers.” Ari

Science

“We made a cloud. First we put water in a cup, then we put shaving cream on, then we put blue water (rain) into the cloud. I just wanted to touch it, it looked so beautiful!” Jemima

“In Science we have been learning about clouds. We know there can be different types. We made a cloud in a cup, it looked cool. We also filled out our weather journal.” Henry

Level 1/2 News

The weather has been wild lately but that hasn’t stopped our learning. Let us tell you what we have been doing for the past two weeks.

In reading we have continued exploring wonderful Authors and discussing which one is our favourite and the reasons we love their books, such as: the illustrations, interesting vocabulary, the storyline, the moral, humour, characters and many more reasons. What a perfect time to enjoy reading while it is raining outside.

In writing we have been practicing our persuasive writing skills. What is your favourite season? If you ask one of the Level 1 or 2 students, they will tell you their favourite and have many great reasons to try and persuade you to agree.

Picture graphs and column graphs are super fun to learn about and create our own. In maths we have been practicing asking questions and gathering data to create our very own graphs. We have enjoyed learning and sharing our data with our friends in the class.

It is extremely exciting exploring robots and different technologies. In Level 1, we have been tinkering, investigating forces and motions, as well as learning how our robot's ‘Bot Bot’ and ‘Jingle’ work. In Level 2, we have been exploring creativity. We have examined many different objects and what problems they were made to solve, to make life easier for humans.

Level 3/4 News

Level 3/ 4 have had a very busy half of term 4. (Can you believe we are half way through already?) The students have really enjoyed creating a variety of advertisements in multi-media. We have been extremely excited to get our new computers and learn how to use them. We’ve started reading scripts and acting out some short plays. The students have started developing some characters and story lines for their very own stop motion animation. In Maths we have been doing some revision and focusing in on Worded problems. There is a buzz in the air as we approach next week’s swimming. Don’t forget towels and bathers and remember to name everthing. We would like to remind you that if you have any camp notices, please return them to your child’s class teachers.

Level 5/6 News

Red Earth Day at Mooroolbark College:

On the 25th of October, the grade 5’s of Rolling Hills Primary School and 5 other primary schools went to Mooroolbark College for Red Earth Day. When they got there, they realised they were the first ones. So they had a little chat with and got to know a tiny bit about some of the teachers and helpers. When the other schools came, they got in their groups and they all headed off to their first activities, some of the activities were: spelling bee, raft rally and sculpting. Group 1 went to their first activity which was Number Crunching. Although Rolling Hills got smashed by Ruskin Park, they were still had so much fun. After that they played a board game about history and geography just for fun. Then they did something called Raft Rally but got smashed by Bimbadeen. We then played a game called golden egg where you had to steal the cones from the other side without getting tagged and we won 2-0.

At the very end they announced all the trophies for all the activities, and in fact Rolling Hills won 3 of them, one for the spelling bee, sculpting and golden egg. We are so proud of Rolling Hills.

Hoop Time:

On Monday the 24th, the All-Star boys went off to the state basketball arena at Knox. They were all very excited and pumped to play against different schools, and hopefully win. It started off well, with the All-Stars winning two of their two games with a wide score difference. Because of the two wins they moved on to play in the Semi-Finals. Sadly, the AllStars lost by 4. But they played well, they had very good ball movement by passing and creating space. The boys have a tournament on Friday so wish them luck!

All Star Boys Regional Finals:

On Monday the 24th of October the All-Star Boys had their regional Finals at Knox Basketball Stadium. As the boys arrived, they were excited and didn’t know what to expect. The games were 8 minute halves so they were 16 minute games. They won their first two games by about 25 points each. In the semi-final they were up by about 8 points with a couple minutes left and it looked like they were going to win. But then the other team go on a run and suddenly it’s a two-point game. The tension was high as the other team was dribbling down. One of the kids drives to the basket then takes a floater. It bounces around the rim for a couple seconds then fall through the net and hits the floor. Then the buzzer goes. It wasn’t possible. They added another 3 minutes onto the clock. We get a quick layup and then they get another layup. The other team keeps fighting back and Rolling Hills end up losing that game. We were pretty disappointed, but we have another tournament on Friday the 28thOctober and we play full games that day, so hopefully we can do better in that.

Grade 6 Graduation Plans:

On Tuesday, 25th of October, the year 6s at Rolling Hills had a graduation planning day, whilst the year 5s went to a Red Earth Day. First the grade 6s went to Miss Cairns’ classroom, and she told them what was happening for the day, whilst they got to see their prep and year 6 photos. Then we went to performing arts to practice our graduation song, which was ‘A million dreams’ from The Greatest Showman movie.

After snack we went to art to do our legacy projects, and that’s a thing the year 6s do to leave behind a memory. We made clay stars and got to design them how we wanted. If you had leftover clay, you could make what you wanted with it.

At the end of the day, the grade 6s played dodgers and runners, after completing a bio for graduation. We played another game called poison ball as well.

Overall, it was a great day. We all can’t wait for graduation!
