Sport Report - Term 1 Week 2, 2020

Welcome back to another year of fantastic College sporting opportunities. We jump straight back into action with the College 1st XI easily disposing of De La Salle College in the quarter finals of the Downie Shield competition. Semi final and final action will be played at Raby on Monday and Tuesday and we wish the boys all the very best for their upcoming matches.

We farewell several staff who have contributed abundantly to the College MCS and ISA Sporting competitions. We wish Mr Luke McGinnity and Mr Regan Suters all the very best in their new schools. We welcome several new staff who have taken the reins of our MCS teams and wish them well for their commitment to the upcoming seasons.

Two more rounds of MCS Basketball and three more rounds of MCS Cricket before respective finals campaigns begin. We wish all teams the best in their upcoming matches. Our Marist Basketball team are in preparation mode as they gear up for the 2020 Marist Championships in Adelaide. Some tough games lie ahead and the boys are relishing the chance to represent the College this year.

A reminder to all parents and carers to read the information attached in the newsletter regarding all College, MCS and NSW CCC representative sporting opportunities that take place in Term 1.

Downie Shield Cricket

On Monday of  this week,  the College 1st XI took on De La Salle Revesby in the quarter-final of the Downie Shield.

After being sent in to bat, we were in trouble early with a run-out (Bryan for a duck) and some soft dismissals leaving us 4 wickets down by the first drinks break for just 56 runs.

Thankfully, Joshua Campbell (95no) and Manoj Weerasingham (51) steadied the ship with a 100 run partnership and some late hitting from a few of our boys took us to 232 off our 50 overs.

10 overs into the chase De La were still 0 wickets down for 25 runs, and the scoreboard pressure eventually had to give, the introduction of some spin led to a number of quick wickets before the first drinks break. Lachlan Campbell 4/30 and Bryan Handunneththi 3/15 took the game away from them and Jake Di Tommaso cleaned the tail up with 2 late wickets. De La were all out for just under 100.

This puts the side into the semi-finals of the competition to be played next week on Monday at Raby with the final to be played on Tuesday. Our opponents are still unknown as their games are still being completed.

Summer Sport Options

This year we will be trialling an online permission note for Representative College teams that compete in MCS, NSW CCC and other knockout competitions. All Thursday Recreational activities will also be covered through this Google Form.

This will save repetitive notes for seasonal sports/activities that can easily be covered by seeking permission once for the year.

This request is to be completed for the start of the Winter Season which commences in Week 8 of this term. We ask all parents and carers to complete this online permission to allow all students a quick transition into the Winter Season of College sports.

House Cup

Moving forward into 2020, the St Gregory’s College House Cup will be back up and running. All student participation and achievement in academic, sport and co-curricular activities will be accounted for as it contributes to the four Houses total point score.

The House Cup and leading point contributor will be acknowledged at the Year 12 final College Assembly in term three of 2020.

I look forward to overseeing and revitalising this competition for the students of the College.
