Senior Girls' Soccer

For many of the girls in the Junior School Senior Soccer Team, it was their first opportunity to play a competitive game of football. This week, their opponent was St. Peter’s Primary School. However, this did not deter them from having a great time and experience something new. While the result of the game was not in their favour, they never gave up and kept trying until the final whistle.

There were many pleasing aspects to the way the girls played. Their tackling was very good and despite the strength of the opposition, they did not take a backward step. They came close to scoring on a few occasions, as they grew in confidence throughout the game. I was very proud of the enthusiasm they showed and sharing their ideas where they can improve in future games.

The girls will be developing new skills throughout the weeks to come and becoming a more cohesive unit. This comes with practice and determination, the latter already being in great abundance. In the end, the girls played hard and had a lot of fun. This will be our mantra in 2020.

Result - St Gregory’s College 4/46 def. St. Peter’s Anglican 4/35

Round 1 of the summer IPSSO competition kicked off at home this week with the Senior Boys Cricket team starting their season against St. Peter’s Anglican. The boys were very enthusiastic to get started and looked forward to getting onto the pitch and channeling their excitement. St Greg’s lost the toss and team captain, Connor, was forced to bowl first. A quick discussion between the coach, captain and players decided that Connor would be given full responsibility of ‘running the ship’ and the boys would follow his leadership and instructions on the field.

The boys bowled brilliantly, keeping their line tight and forcing St. Peter’s to take risks with the bat. Zane was very tidy with the gloves and snagged 2 nice catches behind the stumps and combined with William for a run out. Ethan claimed 2 wickets with the ball and Ben chipped in with a wicket. Some diving efforts from William and Joshua showed that the boys would be looking for half chances and weren’t going to give St. Peter’s any charity in the score book. St Greg’s restricted St Peter’s to 4/35 off their 7 overs.

Zane started us off well, crunching 2 nice boundaries before departing for 11. Ethan chipped in with a handy 6, while Marc and Cohen failed to trouble the score. Will and Ben steadied the chance and finished the innings both not out, with some sundaries helping push the score north of 40. The boys were happy with their first outing in the Blue and Maroon but all agreed some fine tuning at training on Friday will have them raring to go in week 4 against Mt Annan Christian College. Thanks to senior students Blake, Lachlan and Thomas for umpiring, packing up and encouraging the younger boys with a few batting/bowling tips for the next game.

Junior Cricket

Today, began the cricket season for the Junior Cricket team. This year the team is mainly made up of Year 3 students and two Year 4 students.

St Greg’s played St Peters and they defeated them 80 runs to 58. Overall the bowling by the team was very good with Charlie Farias, Isaac Haddad, Will Spencer and Lawson Sutton each taking a wicket.

From a batting point of view they all showed skills that look very promising, with Humza Khan scoring 5 runs. When they were fielding they were keen to back each other up and offer support when one of the other team players did well. Overall a great start to the season. Well done.

Junior Girls Soccer

SGC had a convincing win over St Peters Anglican Primary School with the final score 9 - 0. The girls worked very well as a team considering 7/14 players learnt new skills and had never played a game before. Selena scored 8 goals and Mikayla 1. Ruby H and Ava did an excellent job defending their goal.

Congratulations girls on an awesome win.

Junior Basketball

St Gregory’s def St Peter’s 28-0

Today we saw a convincing display of basketball considering some players had not played a game of basketball before.

Before the start of our first game there was a lot of nervous energy and enthusiasm amongst the players. Once the game started the players became settled and performed really well. It was great to see all players learning from each other and our referees. Special mentions need to go to; Harrison for his fantastic steals created from his defensive pressure and to Baxter for scoring 18 points for the game.

Congratulations on the win team.

Junior Oztag - Round 1 St Greg’s 20 def St Peter’s 2

The 2020 Junior Oztag competition commenced this week with St Gregory’s hosting St Peter’s Anglican College. St Gregory’s began the match on the front foot with some quick tries to Joseph Issa, Finn Dumesny, Luke Ormerod and Jarryd Currell. As the match progressed, the less experienced players started to get a feel for the game and build in confidence. This was demonstrated through their willingness to run the ball and their determination when tagging in defence. St Gregory’s continued to show great teamwork and skill to take out the match 20-2. This was a fantastic result as the team had not even trained together let alone played a game together. Special mentions need to go to Joseph Issa, Noah McKinnon and Chalize Potts for scoring 3 tries each, as well as Denham Tsagalas and Luke Ormerod taking leadership of the team through organising the play on the field and guiding some of the less experienced players through the match. From the sidelines it was great to see how much these players grew and developed in their confidence and skill as the match progressed. Thank you to all parents who came down and supported the team. The children really love seeing you on the sideline.

Next week is a Bye round for St Greg’s so we will take advantage of this time to have a training session and build camaraderie between the team.

Mr Fuser Coach

Senior Oztag

This week saw our Senior Oztag team off to a flying start for our opening match against St Peters Anglican to commence the season.

We displayed great speed in attack and were strong in defence. Skilful ball work lead to many tries spread amongst team members but a special mention to both Harry Hoyle and Alexander Nothdurfter who each scored an impressive hat trick. A convincing win for us with the final score standing at 19 - 0.

As always great sportsmanship was on display both on and off the field. Many thanks to our supporters who attended.

Senior Basketball

St Gregory's def St Peter’s 48-10

Right from the start of the game the team worked well together as they were able to move the ball effectively to the basket and score. It was a convincing win but the team worked really hard to get the 38 point win.

Special mention to Lee, Jack and Brad who lead by example on the court with their ball control and scoring, Max displaying his high work rate both on and off the ball and to Charlotte who was on point with her shooting accuracy scoring 12 points for the match.

A big congratulations to the team as we turn our focus to week 4 against Mt Annan Christian College.
