Acting Principal’s Report

Andrew Arney

COVID cases

As you will have seen from my flurry of newsfeeds recently, the last few weeks have seen a number of COVID cases at MGC. I am glad to be able to report that all of the positive cases are doing well, and have only suffered mild symptoms.

I would like to thank the parents, students and staff involved for following the test and isolate instructions, and for emailing in negative test results before returning to school. I would also like to thank everyone involved for moving the final day of our Yr 12 Headstart program so quickly online as a result of one of these cases.

It seemed fitting for the last weeks of 2021 to throw a few extra challenges at us. Let's hope that our final week for the year goes much more smoothly.

VCE Results

This Thursday morning is a big day for our Year 12 students. From 7am our amazing year 12 cohort will start receiving their individual subject results as well as their ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank).

To our year 12s - it is an important time to reinforce that you are so much more than any number. Your ATA does not define you, and it does not assure you nor deprive you of future success. We as a community are proud of the achievements of every single one of you, and we stand beside you to celebrate the growth you have shown during your time at MGC. As a school, everyone here will be available to support you as your results come through, so reach out if you need - and a message to your teachers letting them know how you went is always greatly appreciated if you are able!

To Families - Thursday will be a fabulous day to celebrate growth and achievement, to so please be sure to prioritise some time to not only to honour your students achievements, but yours also - your contribution over all of these years can not be undersold! Latrobe University also have this great guide on how you can support year 12 students during the release of results, and please do not hesitate to reach out to us at MGC if we can help in any way.

Thanks

As this is my last newsletter as Acting Principal, I would like to take the opportunity to once again thank each and every member of our community for your steadfast support during the year.

Your messages of care and support have meant the world to the MGC staff, and I couldn’t be prouder of the resilience of our students, staff and families during a year which only compounded the distress of 2020.

Last year Brent Houghton shared this picture, a symbol that even though we are all in the same storm we are all in different boats, and therefore will experience the storm differently. To extend upon the oceanic metaphor, 2021 has felt like a year where we lashed our boats together and weathered the storm in solidarity, and I couldn't think of a community I would rather have had the support of during this time.

I am excited to be taking on the role of Assistant Principal of Senior School while Sefija Demirova takes a year of leave. After working with the 2022 Yr 11 and 12 senior cohorts in previous years I am honoured to get the chance to support them their through final years at MGC.

I hope you all have some fantastic down time over the Christmas break, and prioritise time to renew, refresh and restore.

Merry Christmas to you and your families!

Andrew
