A sample of David John Dunkin’s Life

Friends’ alum David Dunkin (1968) shares his story of life’s ups and downs.  “I have lots of stories over the years to tell, my achievements, my travels, my worldwide experiences and of course my family. My sister and I were enrolled in Friends' Boarding School in 1959. We were totally out of our comfort zone from the previous 9 years. It was winter in Hobart, freezing when we arrived and I've never experienced that cold before. Honestly, my lips got severely cracked.”

The Friends’ School Alumni Representatives would like to give a warm welcome to our newest Representative, Charlotte Rogers, joining the team from the Class of 2020. As a member of the newest cohort of alumni, we are thrilled with the different perspectives Charlotte will bring to the group. Thank you for volunteering Charlotte.

New Alumni Pins

Friends’ Alumni Pins have been updated with each Year level’s leaving year (cohort). Formerly presented in Year 12, the pins will now be presented as students start Year 7 to build a sense of connection amongst classmates as they share their educational journey. The Friends’ Alumni Community cares about all students' growth and wellbeing during and after School and the pins are a way of connecting students with the broader Friends’ community.

On Wednesday 2 December, a unique working bee gathered to attach just under 1,000 pins to presentation cards ready to present to all students from Year 7 to 12 in Term 1 2021. From 2022, pins will be presented to incoming Year 7. Students who leave prior to Year 7 will be awarded a general pin without the year.

Thank you to Year Level Parent Reps Brenda Read, Suzie Wright and Candy Ng, and Alumni Reps Flick Boucher (1989), Mary Woolnough (1969) and Lucy Loney (1988) for your help. Thank you also to our Development Coordinator Freya Campbell (2013) for facilitating the workshop and the yummy light lunch!

Happy 100th Birthday Nancy Newbon!

Nancy Newbon is a beloved former Friends’ high school maths teacher who taught many students between 1954 and 1981. Nancy Newbon was born in Hobart in 1920, 100 years ago! I met her in her room at Barossa Park Lodge, where tea, cookies and chocolates were flowing. Continue to read Nancy’s story here.
