Our Community
The Last Pandemic
As 2020 draws to a close and we reflect on a year of challenge and change, it is interesting to look back even further to 1919 to a snapshot of school life and to see how the Friends’ community responded to the last great pandemic – the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919, also known as the Spanish Flu.
High School Library Technician, Nicole Parums, has written a fantastic article on the subject, which you can read here.
2020 Leavers' Service
On Wednesday 14 October The School held a service to farewell 139 Year 12 students and welcome them to The Friends’ School Alumni Community.
We are proud of all of our 2020 graduates and their school journey, whether they have been with us for one year or 14.
This year’s Head Girl and Boy wish the Class of 2020 a bright and meaningful future, “As we move on with the rest of our lives, we can’t wait to see how each and every one of you will change your piece of the world for the better.”
On behalf of the whole school community, congratulations to all our students on their hard work and good luck for those sitting exams this month.
Principle Nelson File encourages every student to “let their lives speak”.
You can watch the full Leavers' Service below.
Southern Support School Social
Every year Friends’ proudly hosts the annual social for the Southern Support School families. This year it was achieved by holding a “Virtual Space Disco” via Zoom. An enthusiastic group of volunteers from Clemes and High School organised party bags, a space-themed playlist and a variety of activities including a scavenger hunt, mask decorating, a balloon conga and lots of dancing and singing.
Some of the Southern Support students were able to gather together in the YLOT (Young Leaders of Tasmania) Office with Keren Franks and some SSS teachers and others logged in from their homes. It was lots of fun for everyone involved.
Leavers' Tree Planting
Our Annual Leaver's Tree Planting went ahead at the end of October on a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
Each year, the leaving class gift a tree back to the School as a thank you and as a gift for future generations of Friends' students.
This year the class of 2020 planted a Native Hop Bush near the Pavillion. The Hop Bush is a fast-growing plant, ideal for encouraging birds and insects.
Thank you, class of 2020, for your gift!
Student2Student Program
Year 10 students Annabel Woolward, Morgan White, Zoe Adams and Sarah Eaton were recently presented with their certificates for participating in the Student2Student reading program by Leela Walford from The Smith Family.
Student2student is a peer-to-peer reading support program which matches older Buddies with a younger Reader to help improve their reading skills, confidence and enjoyment of reading.
Our extensive Service program offers many opportunities for our students to give back to the community and explore new ways of volunteering their time in the service of others.
