K - 2 Sports Day
The Kindergarten - Year 2 Sports day was held in late November under sunny skies on the Bottom Green at the Argyle Street Campus. Thank you to all the staff and students for their enthusiastic participation and to the parents, guardians and grandparents, who took time out of their day to come and support their children and grandchildren.
Rowing Fun
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” (from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame)
It's been a busy time for Friends' Rowing, with the Rowing season officially upon us!
Our new Head of Rowing, Anthony Edwards, has been busy bringing new life to the Rowing program and encouraging participation across all levels. We have had 10 rowing squads training during Term 4, from Under 13s through to Opens, all under the guidance of coaches and volunteers, without whom the rowing program would not be possible.
Our Sculling Skills program for Year 6 students kicked off the season in the Term 3 holidays at Cornelian Bay. Coached by the Senior Friends' rowers, this program aims to develop sculling skills and to give young students a chance to have a go at rowing in a safe environment, hopefully encouraging them to join the Friends' rowing program next year.
The Friends' Rowing community then came together for a welcome event where we acknowledged our Year 12 students who are leaving us, who were fortunate to name three new boats, the ‘Alex Hutchinson’ ’The Ibbott Family’ & the ’Tim & Jo Morris’ to acknowledge the special contribution made by these people - Thankyou to everyone who attended this wonderful evening.
Our Open and Under 16 crews (and our volunteer coaches) competed at Lake Barrington with some positive results in late November. A busy time, yet enjoyable for everyone involved.
Most recently (over the weekend of 5 December) we saw 80 junior rowers competing at their first regatta for the season at Franklin.
Year 7/8 Girls AFL
This year The Friends’ School was delighted to have two Year 7/8 Girls AFL teams compete in the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS) competition in Term 4. The girls played with fantastic endeavour and commitment. Thanks to the coaching staff and families for supporting the girls’ first season playing school AFL.
