Exciting news! Sacred Heart is in the running for Catholic Education WA's Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards. These awards recognise programs and initiatives in Catholic schools across WA that support CEWA's vision of providing Christ-centred, child focused and engaging learning environments. Sacred Heart has five nominations amongst the categories.

Voting for the People's Choice category is now open until Sunday 11 September. Please note the People’s Choice Award is across all categories and each individual is only entitled to one vote.

Our nominations are:

1. Thinking Blue - Marine Science Outreach Initiative (Education category) by Mr John Ryan

Thinking Blue is a program which enables marine scientists from Western Australia’s major research and tertiary education institutes to deliver presentations and Q&A sessions to high school students. Western Australian Marine Science Institute (WAMSI) sources researchers from institutions including all of WA’s universities, CSIRO, DPIRD and more to live-stream to the Year 12 ATAR Marine class at Sacred Heart College. Over 30 schools are invited to the live event, with the recording being shared with students to provide them with an insight into current research projects and exposure to the wide variety of careers and pathways undertaken by marine scientists. 2. SHine! (Education category) by Mr Michael Chiera, Mrs Susan Carrick, Mrs Sandra Manning, Mr Justin Whitt, Mrs Kirsten Daley, Ms Martine Lewis and Mrs Shirley Slade

To complement Sacred Heart College’s success in embedding the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities into the core curriculum, we introduced SHine!, a middle-school program aimed at providing students with authentic learning opportunities to develop key essential skills through social entrepreneurship. Students commence the program in Year 7, where they develop skills including collaboration, innovation, perseverance and critical thinking through fun, intensive, practical workshops. In Year 8, students are then ready to undertake Change Makers, an introduction to social entrepreneurship, centred on the Sustainable Development Goals and Design Thinking methodology. For students wanting more, the Just Start It program is on offer in Year 9, 2023. VOTE HERE.

3. Stepping Stones (Community category) by STUDENT Kieran Lobo (Stewardship Captain)

Stepping Stones is a student not-for-profit initiative that works to clothe and support the marginalised and unemployed in our local community. Its purpose is to support them so they have the best chance of success at their job interviews, which allows them to be self-empowered! The proverb ‘Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime’ was the inspiration for this initiative. When we help people feel empowered, connected and contributing to society, we provide them with dignity, and long term health and wellbeing benefits. VOTE HERE.

4. We Personally Welcome You (Community category) by Mrs Narelle Burnett, Miss Natasha Camilleri and Miss Niki Roche

Sacred Heart College’s personalised video project was designed to portray the College’s strong focus on pastoral care, which is based on John 10:14: “I am the good shepherd, I know my own and my own know me". Prior to orientation, each incoming Year 7 student receives a personalised welcome video created especially for them. The video features the Principal welcoming them by a voiceover and text, a reference to their primary school and seeing their own name handwritten on a piece of wood. The video is received with excitement and joy and is eagerly shared with others. VOTE HERE.

5. Student Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Framework (Community category) by Mrs Wiesia Collins and the Assistant Deputy Principals

Embracing the axiom that students learn best when they are happy, confident and healthy, the College has given the pastoral care and wellbeing of students the highest priority. To ensure a connected, coherent and comprehensive whole school approach to wellbeing services, the Sacred Heart College Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Framework has been developed to provide an instructive and interactive resource for teachers and support staff. The digital platform provides easy access to information, ideas, strategies and activities so that teachers are better equipped to meet the pastoral and wellbeing needs of students. VOTE HERE.
