Losing something, at least for me, is extremely annoying. Whether it's my keys, wallet or glasses (which is usually the reason for losing the other things!) it brings up feelings of frustration and anxiety whenever it happens.
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus considers the better part of losing things - the finding. Using stories of sheep and coins, Jesus reminds us of the great joy and relief of finding what we thought was lost.
One of the great positives of recent technology has been the discovery of (at least for those of us Generation X and older) things we thought were lost and only lived on in our memory: TV and music from our youth, re-living political and sporting moments, or even just revisiting fashion from our youth. Though, perhaps the greatest gift has been the possibility to connect with family and friends with whom we had lost contact. Jesus invites us to be “finders” and people who “remember” - to put things, and people, back together. When we are mindful of the individuals we encounter each day, and wonder who might be an outsider or a “lost sheep”, we are doing this work. Maybe it’s a homeless man or woman, or perhaps it is an older neighbour who lives alone; someone who would appreciate some of our time and attention, or a family member who lives on the fringes of our shared life.
For Jesus, each person, regardless of talent, intelligence, salary, or status, is worthy of love and being valued.
As we follow our call to follow him, to live as he did, may we become people who give others this loving and special gift!
