Intermediate VCAL and the Schools in Philanthropy Program

On Tuesday 27th April, our Intermediate VCAL class presented our recommendations to the board of the Geelong Community Foundation at the Geelong Library. This was the culmination of our work in the ‘Schools in Philanthropy’ program that we commenced in February.

At the beginning of the project Gail Rodgers (CEO of the Geelong Community Foundation), spoke to us about the ‘Schools in Philanthropy’ Program. We were provided with a fixed amount of money and three grant applications from local community organisations. The amounts requested were more than the amount we had been provided.

It was then up to us to decide how to distribute the money between them based on

their applications and the work they do. We did site visits to the three organisations and asked them a range of questions about how their work helps contribute to the public and surrounding community. We used the Geelong Community Foundation criteria to provide each organisation with a score and after lots of deliberation we were able to come to our final decision.

It was then up to Hayley, Scar, Paige, Claire and Giorgia to communicate our findings to the board. They did a fantastic job, clearly and succinctly communicating our recommendations!

We participated in this program with three other schools from the Geelong region (Sacred Heart College, Surf Coast Secondary College and Clonard College).

This was an incredibly insightful experience for all members in the Intermediate VCAL class and we are very grateful for the amazing opportunity to gain knowledge in philanthropy and contribute to our local community.
