Diversity Week: The R.A. Kartini Cup

Every year during Diversity Week, MFG goes up against Saint Ignatius College in an epic battle of languages – the R.A. Kartini Cup.

Students answered 533,328 questions in over 40 languages. Liv Leslie (12A) took full advantage of her final Education Perfect Languages competition to earn a whopping 12,021 points and it was lovely to see Liv donating her top-scorer prize to support Geelong Mums. Congratulations to Liv and her team for being the highest-scoring class in the competition.

At the other end of the school, Grace Thomas (7L), Jarrah Mayfield Kenny (7L), Jemma King (7D) and Evie Butcher (7D) were in our top 10 of scorers, helping MFG to retain the R.A. Kartini Cup for the second year in a row.

The most popular languages during the completion were Indonesian and French, but students also earned nearly 20,000 points in Italian, Japanese, Latin, Malay, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese.

Selamat, felicitations, congratulazioni, おめでとう, gratulationes, selamat berjaya, تهانينا. 恭喜你 and congratulations to everyone.

Year 10 and 11 Indonesian at Pondok Nasi Bakar

Covid & 2020 took a few things away from us – one of those things was the opportunity to try a range of fantastic Indonesian food. In March 2021, Bu Hall, Pak Ross and Bu Abby (a pre-service teacher) banded together to help make this dream a reality.

Nargis - It was fun, I had fun eating grilled chicken - it was really good. We had ice cream with boba at the bottom and toast with other things on top like cheese and chocolate sprinkles!

Alyssa - The staff were very friendly, and patient with us when we ordered in Indonesian. The food was amazing and I would definitely go eat there again.

Jasmyn - We got a good welcome with friendly staff giving us free teh kotak as a thank you for coming. Their dishes were presented very well and had good serving sizes that after I was very very full. I am very white and couldn't have the chilli or I would have melted so I got Alyssa to do it.

Amity - The staff at Pondok Nasi Bakar were rad. It was a great way to liven up VCE and I'm super happy that I was reunited with es campur. No matter how picky you are, you can't go wrong with Indonesia's weird desserts.

Isabel - Going to lunch at Pondok Nasi Bakar was 'sangat menyenangkan' (very fun)! The staff were very friendly and gave us some free sweet tea! The food was delicious, we had a range of traditional dishes and even some desserts.

Rakshitha - I had a really nice time at the Pondok Nasi Bakar restaurant! I really enjoyed exploring the new foods and trying new things that I have never tried before. It was cool to see that what I eat on a day to day basis is so different to what other people in Indonesia. I really am grateful for this experience, and definitely will be visiting again.

Ain - I enjoyed my time at Pondok Nasi Bakar. I had sate kambing, it was quite different to how I know sate because it didn't have peanut sauce and the meat was a bit different but overall it was really nice.

Ebony - This excursion was very interesting and enjoyable and we loved our food and new experience. We also got to order in Indonesian and got to practice our skills.

Ella - I watched Jean order all of our food in Indonesian, which was very brave and I don't know how I could do that myself. I did feel slightly bad as I did not have room to finish my food, and I thought the waiters might think I didn't!
