LMR Australian Rules Football

On May 26th, a select group of year 11 and 12 boys took the trip out to Epsom to face St Joseph’s Echuca and Mildura Senior School in the Loddon Mallee Regional Competition. It was a cloudy day to play football, with a strong wind directing towards the northern goals and patches of rain throughout. Despite the weather, the boys were able to compete with courage and skill throughout both games.

Mildura Senior School were the taller of the two opposing sides that Girton had to face, meaning that the team needed to ensure they were competing well in the air and on the ground to win the game. After an exceptional team effort to move the ball effectively and clamp up Mildura’s forward line, Girton was able to secure the victory 32-20.

St Joseph’s were a competitive side as well, as they were equipped with many athletic players throughout their team. Because this was the second consecutive game Girton played, they began the game slower than St Joseph’s. Despite the shaky start, Girton was able to pick themselves up and improve on their teamwork and defence to defeat St Joseph’s 36-19. Well done to the team for picking themselves up and securing the second victory for the day.

By beating both sides in the tournament, Girton will move on the state finals, which will take place in Ballarat. This is the first time that Girton has achieved this, so congratulations to the players who will be able to take part in the event.

Special thanks to Mr Whitsed, Miss Speed and Mr Langan who were able to make the day possible by coaching and managing the team. Also, thank you to Zaydyn Lockwood and Fraser McKinstry for volunteering to umpire.
