BOOK WEEK

Jane Godwin talks to the Year 7s about her novel ‘Falling From Grace’

On Tuesday afternoon a number of the Year 7 English students swapped PASE for a presentation by Jane Godwin, author of the Year 7 English text, ‘Falling From Grace’.

She spoke about her inspiration for the novel, as well as some of her planning and writing strategies. Jane is the author of over 30 books for young people, including picture books and young adult novels. Her most recent novel, ‘When Rain turns to snow’, was shortlisted for the CBCA Older Readers award.

The Year 7 audience were wonderful, and a number of students asked questions at the end. See below for some comments from students about the presentation.

Ms. Boyd (Teacher Librarian)

“This week my fellow year 7s and I had the amazing opportunity to attend a presentation by the wonderful Australian author Jane Godwin. Jane gave us an insight into the real-life events and experiences that helped her write her novel ‘Falling from Grace’. She informed us that some of her inspiration came from her own childhood and family and that her son inspired her characterisation of Kip. Jane even gave us a sneak peek at the new book she is working on. After the presentation was over, some lucky students including myself, were able to ask some questions about her books and her career. It was a great experience to learn about the novel we are studying from the author herself, and was definitely a big help in understanding the characters and themes.”

Ashlee Fletcher 7S

“I thought the talk yesterday was informative in the fact that we got to see the author’s perspective on the book and we also got to meet her and just know who she is.”

Beau Davis 7B

“My feedback for the Jane Godwin's talk is that it gave us an insight about the book, and it also made me rethink some parts in the book, and why she would have written it like that. I really liked how she described her life and what the book meant to her when she was writing it.”

Sarah Jersier-Sandiford 7B

“I found the talk yesterday very interesting as you got to see the author’s perspective and find out how and why she wrote the book.”
