Interschool Sport Report

A lot of events have occurred since the last sport report. Term 2 finished off with the Regional Finals for Cross Country and the Term 2 Sport Days for Year 7 and 8. Term 3 has started off in a hectic fashion with the State Cross Country Championships, Regional Finals and the upcoming Term 3 Sport Day for Year 9’s and 10’s

Term 2 Sport Days

Year 8 Social Netball
Year 7 Netball - A and B Teams
Year 8 Netball
Year 8 Social Netball
Year 7 Netball - A and B Teams
Year 8 Netball

On both the Year 7 and 8 Sport days, MGC had close to 140 participants competing in Netball, Soccer and Badminton. This represents over half each year level and demonstrates the role that physical activity and sport plays in the MGC culture. The behavior and competitive spirit of all students was exemplary, making the experience for all competitors and coaches a memorable one.

Out of all the competing teams, our Yr7 and 8 Netball teams and Yr7 Badminton teams were successful in their quest to represent the Division at the Regional Finals.

Junior AFL

The last Wednesday of Term 2 had the Junior AFL Carnival Day run at Royal Park. MGC fielded 4 teams, with 2 of them playing off for a spot in the Grand Final. The MGC ‘A’ team beating the ‘B’ team by less than a goal. This means our Junior team will join our Intermediate team in the Regional Finals during this week.

State Cross Country

Our cross country season came to its finale last week at the State Championships held at Bundoora Park. Our 17 runners battled the elements and the very tough competition and ended the day with some pleasing results. Our 3 teams; 15yrs, 16yrs, and 17-20yrs all finished 5th in their respective age groups. The individual highlight of the day was a 7th place finish by Heidi Cannell (Year 7) in the 12-13yrs event.

The coach Bridget Tellefson will have a more specific wrap up of the event in the next edition of the newsletter.

Senior Netball – Regional Finals

With Isabella Prichard and Emma Convey heading up our back line on the senior netball court, I knew we were in for a shot at going to States! As they constantly blocked the passes into the shooting zone, the centre court players: Rose Picking, Chloe Cranage, Naomi Tombolato and Scarlet Winstanley, combined brilliantly to bring the ball back up the court, where Jess Gibson and Georgia Rogers combined beautifully to convert 98% of their shots! Congratulation girls on four fantastic games, where you repeatedly demonstrated skill, grit and teamwork to come out as winners and very deservedly gain a spot in the State Senior Netball School Championships 2019.

Good Luck!!

Hockey

One of the traditions at MGC is the awarding of sporting colours to any students who won a SSV State Championships gold medal. The award includes a letter of congratulations and the privilege of getting their achievements embroidered onto their PE vests.

Amanda Lucas and myself held a lunch and presentation ceremony for the 60 students who won a gold medal in Track and Field, Hockey, AFL and Swimming. I have already seen some of the students at school proudly showing off their newly embroidered vests.
