A Waste-Free End of Term Party

By Darby Wells 7C2
You have got to admit everyone looks forward to them, whether you’re in year 7 or year 12 they mark the fact that you have finished a term of learning.
Most parties are entertaining when you’re actually participating in them, but afterwards you tend to regret all the chips you ate especially when you’re feeling sick for the rest of that day. The floors are disgusting and you end up spending part of your party cleaning up all the waste and wrappers which will probably end up taking thousands of years to break down anyway. Sometimes you end up wondering why your class even decided to have a party when you know that you are going to really regret it later on!
That’s why at the end of Term 2, marking half way through Year Seven, 7 C1 and 2 decided that we were going to throw a waste-free party in our final lesson of Physical World. Our teachers, Mr Bond and Ms McIntosh were on board.
We baked a lot of treats and ate a lot of what was very good food; helping us come to the conclusion that baking our own things, instead of using soft plastics and materials that are certainly not helping our future and instead putting our treats in containers and on plates, was much more rewarding than any other end of term party!
Most of the “waste” created by our party was completely compostable. We put it into the Lyceum compost bin, affectionately called “Costa” after our favourite composter, Costa from Gardening Australia.
This experience showed us that we can enjoy and celebrate our milestones together in a sustainable and health conscious way.
