MSJ 2019 Sports Representative Lunch

On Thursday October 18, all students that participated in SCSA sport this year were invited to come and enjoy lunch and listen to our fantastic guest speaker Georgie Parker who was a former Australian Hockeyroos team member, Olympian and Gold medal Commonwealth games athlete , and is now playing for Collingwood in the AFLW. It was a very successful afternoon and it was great to see the students celebrate a successful SCSA  sporting year and to be inspired by Georgie.

This year MSJ competed in 17 different SCSA sports and were Champions on 11 occasions. In addition, 391 students competed throughout the year in various SCSA sports with 60 students representing MSJ in four or more sports.

Congratulations to all the students listed below,  who received their 2018 Sports Representative badges, for representing MSJ at four or more sports this year.

Netball

On September 17, two senior, two intermediate and three junior netball teams went to the 2018 SCSA Netball competition. All teams played hard against some really tough competition. Many of us got into the semi finals and even into the grand finals. However at the end of the day, only the Junior B team won their final It was an amazing day and a great opportunity for all to make some new friends and share their skills. A huge thank you to all the coaches which included teachers and senior students, who made the day possible and gave all the teams support to get through even the most stressful games! Here’s to another year for netball at MSJ!

Lacrosse

On September 8, four teams of Senior and Junior MSJ students went to compete in SCSA Lacrosse. It was a great day for some of the students to embrace the spirit of Lacrosse and play against other schools. We played against Mater Christi 1 and 2, PCW, Sion A and B and our own MSJ B team. Our Junior B team did really well and tried their hardest on the day. They won, lost and drew their games.

Our Junior A team was undefeated and went into the grand final against Mater Christi 1. We drew the Grand Final which sent us into two 5 minute halves which ended up being 0-0. A sudden death followed at the end and Mater Christi finished 3-2. It was such a nail biting game. The MSJ Senior team were undefeated champions on the day , with Gwen Lynch winning Most Valuable Player. We would like to thank Sue, Mr Piazza, Mrs Sexton, Ms Hawkins and Di Smith from Newport Lacrosse Club, without these teachers and volunteers helping us in Lunchtime sessions, we would not be able to compete on this day.

Softball

On Monday October 15 Mount St. Joseph’s junior and intermediate softball teams travelled to Geelong softball centre for the SCSA softball competition. We were all very excited to put into play the skills we had been learning leading up to the tournament, and to have fun while doing so. It was a hot day, but this didn’t stop us from working together and supporting each other. I was in the junior team and it was great to see that we cheered each other on, had lots of fun and that we improved as the day went on. This was the case for the intermediates as well. Both teams placed second overall, which was a great effort. The player of the day for the intermediate division was awarded to Jenan Dib. A big thank you to the coaches who helped us prepare leading up to the competition and coached us on the day.
