Into The Woods

We are in the middle of rehearsals for this year’s musical. It is the first time that we have done a Stephen Sondheim musical and the students are working hard to transport their audience to the world of fairy tales. The set is almost finished and the costumes are being made. It is a Brothers Grimm inspired musical.

The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by a witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Also in the woods, we meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves.

By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.

Songs include It Takes Two, Ever After, Agony, On the Steps of the Palace, Children Will Listen, Last Midnight and many others.

Drama Study Trip

The Year 12 Drama students are getting ready to go on the annual trip to Melbourne during the first week of the holidays. In Melbourne they will participate in intensive workshops run by the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). It is a fantastic week where they get taught by industry professionals and perform.

They will also see plays during the Melbourne Comedy Festival. In this year’s Comedy Festival line up we have John XXIII College alumni Xavier Michelides (class of 1999), James Eaton (class of 1999), Liam Ryan (class of 1997) performing. Holly Meegan (class of 2005) is also performing in My Fair Lady directed by Julie Andrews.
