Diocesan Tennis Gala Day

On March 2nd, 4 boys and 4 girls joined the touch teams on a 6.30am bus trip to Wagga for the Diocesan Tennis Gala Day. Alexandra Yardley, Sophia Romeo, Madeline Raworth and Gabrielle De Lucchi formed the girls team while Connor Moore, Yash Rathi, Angus Munro and Jack Pentony joined up for the boys team. They played a round robin tournament against Mater Dei and Kildare (Wagga), St Francis (Leeton) and Xavier (Albury). Each student played a set of singles and a set of doubles against each school, with all students showing great spirit and respect for the traditions of the game. Despite the extra challenge from playing more senior players (most of our squad were from years 7 and 8 while most of our opponents were from years 10 and 11), the boys and girls walked on the court with heads held high and a smile on their face. Against steep odds, the girls’ combined game totals saw them ahead of 2 of their 4 opponent schools while the boys were dealt a sobering lesson in the levels needed to match the diocese’s best. Connor and Yash had an exciting doubles moment where they were dominating the best pair of the day from Xavier. The boys also achieved their best result of the day with a draw against St Francis, However consistency throughout is so important in tennis and many players were left to rue the costs of a slow start. As the youngest group in the tournament, there is great confidence in the benefits from this brave start in the coming years. Well done girls and boys!
