NOW ACCEPTING 2024 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

LPS families with children who will start Kindergarten in 2024 are asked to complete at online enrolment as soon as possible.

Children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5, on or before 31 July that year. All children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday.

An invitation to attend Little Leumeah Learners (LLL), a tailor-made program designed to prepare enrolling students with the smoothest possible transition to school and also our Orientation Days will be forwarded to families who have finalised their child/ren's enrolment. Have your say about your child’s education

The NSW Department of Education is developing a new plan for NSW public education. We want to hear from our parents, carers, and community on this important work.

Our draft plan for NSW public education outlines how we will create an outstanding and equitable education system and uplift trust and pride in the teaching profession. It has a focus on how public education can transform lives and sets aspirations for every learner.

We invite you to have your say on this important work. You can do this by visiting the department's draft plan for NSW public education.

Here you will find an online engagement platform that can be used to share your feedback. It will take between a few minutes to 10 minutes, depending on the level of feedback you wish to provide.

Consultation will take place between Monday 17 July 2023 and Friday 25 August 2023.

ICAS Exams

Leumeah Public School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS competitions this year.

WHAT IS ICAS?

ICAS is an online academic competition that is designed to assess Year 3-6 students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science and Writing. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals. We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year.

NAPLAN 2023 Individual Student Reports

This term, you will receive your child’s NAPLAN 2023 individual student report. Please find below important information to know about individual student results and NAPLAN 2023.

New proficiency standards

From 2023, the Individual student report will look different to previous years. One significant change is that NAPLAN results are now reported against proficiency standards, with student achievement shown against 4 levels of proficiency: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. The NAPLAN measurement scale and time series have also been reset. NAPLAN reports and ongoing assessments

NAPLAN tests are only one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. As they are held once every 2 years for each student, they cannot replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Student results

When reading your child’s NAPLAN 2023 results please keep in mind:

From 2023, new proficiency standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting. This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards.
A performance result less than expected may indicate the student requires more targeted support or may just reflect other factors that affected their performance on that day.  
Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
Individual students may demonstrate different skills or understandings depending on which parts of the tests they performed more strongly in. Students whose results fall near the top of a proficiency level will be able to demonstrate more of the skills, or more complex understanding. Students whose results fall near the lower end of a level will be able to demonstrate fewer of the skills, or less complex understanding.
It is important to remember NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. They complement ongoing assessments so that teachers can best support teaching and learning. The achievement demonstrated in classroom-based assessments and reporting through A-E grades provide parents with timely feedback on how their child is progressing.

Parents and caregivers who are concerned about their child’s NAPLAN results (when received) are encouraged to talk to their child’s classroom teacher. If your child/ren's results indicate ‘Needs additional support’, please contact your child’s classroom teacher to discuss, as additional support may already be available to those students who need it.  

Allergies: Student Lunch Boxes and Birthday Celebrations

We encourage families to keep food allergies in mind when packing their child/ren's school lunches. Many students have varied food-based allergies, including allergies to peanuts, dairy, gluten and egg. Some of these allergic reactions can lead to severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.

With COVID Smart Measures and child allergies in mind, families wanting to provide a birthday treat for their child are asked to either make a purchase through Mel’s Lunchbox (eg. iceblocks/individual cupcakes) or provide store bought/packaged cupcakes and ensure packaging detailing the ingredients is also provided to the class room teacher. If planning a birthday treat for your child please contact your child's classroom teacher to discuss if there are children in the class who may have a food allergy, to ensure no child is excluded.
