Visit of the "marimba man" Walt Hampton
The School’s open-entry marimba program commenced when over a decade ago, one of our music staff stumbled across two books of music of American percussionist, Walt Hampton, in the back of a music van visiting the School. The energy and positive vibe of the Shona-inspired music appealed to a number of our students and became the backbone of much of the marimba program that was to follow. At long last we welcome Walt to the School. A professional trained timpanist, Walt is based in Washington State where he works in a local elementary school whilst also running several community marimba bands, and travelling as a clinician to work with music teachers and schools. Walt will be at the School from Monday 18 June until Tuesday 26 June, with his visit culminating in a special concert on the Tuesday evening, commencing at 6pm in the Farrall Centre (Free Admission). The concert will feature a lot of Walt’s music as well as compositions by current and past students. A highlight will be a performance of the Old Scholars’ Marimba band, which has been formed for this occasion.
