Trivia Night

The Trivia Night Gala 2018 is this Saturday. This is Galilee’s ONLY fundraiser for the year and we are asking all our families to support this great event. Many schools are continually asking families to support fundraising events, but at Galilee we made the decision to have just one fundraiser each year where we ask families for their support.

If you aren’t able to make it to the evening you can support the silent auction from home as it is on-line at https://www.32auctions.com/galileetriviaauction2018. I have taken a look and with over 120 items to bid on they are varied and there is something for everyone.

We have more people attending this year and with a new venue, the on-line silent auction, the wine cellar raffle and the live auction items we are aiming to raise more funds than ever. The money raised goes directly to support all our students at Galilee. Last year the money raised paid for the netting around the play area and towards the upgrade of the CCTV system. Both have made our school a safer place. This year we are currently in discussions about the best way to spend the funds raised and will announce this as soon as we have made a final decision.

The Trivia Night Gala would not have been made possible without the hard work organising the evening and the tireless hours sourcing donations from local businesses and preparing the on-line auction so that the whole school community can be involved. A huge thank you to the team of parent volunteers and Events Committee that has been led by Bec Giorgilli.

Remember to dig deep this Saturday night, and I look forward to catching up with the parents who will be there.

Nude Food Tuesdays

To reduce the amount of waste Galilee produces, the Student Representative Council (SRC)-- is implementing 'Nude Food Tuesdays'.

Every Tuesday students are encouraged to bring 'nude' snack and lunch. Snack and lunch is considered nude when it does not contain any throw away packaging such as glad wrap, juice boxes, zip lock bags or disposable cutlery.

Each nude lunchbox will earn a point for their class. The class with the most points will be announced at assembly and will become the Nude Food Champions for the week. Please see the poster for more information about how to pack a nude food lunchbox.

Lion King Jr Tickets Selling Fast

Lion King Jr tickets are selling fast.

Please ensure you return your ticket form to the office ASAP.

Last ticket forms will be accepted on Tuesday 7th August 3.30pm.

Ticket orders will be filled on Wednesday 8th August.

School Camp Program

At the end of last term, the Galilee Community were invited to fill in a survey and express their views about the current camp program provided for students in Years Three to Six. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for taking the time for sharing their views about the current camps. Miss Otte has done an amazing job maintaining our camps over the last two years and has formed very strong connections to our current camps attended by our students.

Earlier this year we asked for feedback from our community, based on your feedback, we will continue with the camps that currently run at Galilee. The Camps in Years Four to Six were overwhelmingly supported by the community and dates for these camps are now confirmed for 2019. Dates for 2020 are in the process of being finalised and secured before the end of this term.

The Year Three Camp feedback was suppported in the majority to continue with the Zoo Snooze. Mr Martello and I did visit Scienceworks as a potential destination for Year 3s, however ultimately it was decided that the facilities and activities at Melbourne Zoo were more appropriate for our students. Later this year our Year Three students will be sleeping overnight at the Melbourne Zoo, in their respective classes. This will be the third year that Galilee attends the Zoo Snooze program. It is an amazing experience for the students to sleepover and complete night time activities around the zoo.

Based on the survey feedback, I am pleased to announce that we are planning an overnight stay for our Year Two students at school. The date is confirmed for Thursday 18th October. Year Two parents will be given all the information about this new camp in the next two weeks, to prepare for this exciting experience and an information session will be organised for before the end of term. I look forward to working with Miss Fahy and Miss Burke to provide the best overnight experience for the Year Two students to enjoy.

In 2019, the program will consist of the following camps:

Year Six - Canberra Camp
Year Five - Merricks Camp
Year Four - Angahook Camp
Year Three - Zoo Snooze
Year Two - Overnight School Sleepover

Discussions are currently being held for students in Year One to complete an extended school day in 2019. The purpose of this longer school day would be to prepare for the School Sleepover, seeing the school outside of their regular school hours. With the inclusion of this extended school day, the possibility of every student being involved in a certain aspect of a camp program is an exciting future for Galilee. Preps will also be having a special afternoon tea next year, where they will remain at school past the normal dismissal time.

To confirm the best possible dates for our students to attend camps, we are currently attempting to secure our regular camps for 2020. When these dates are confirmed we will notify the appropriate 2018 year level through the school newsletter.

Once again I would like to thank the Galilee community for their input with our Galilee Camp Program. Camps are an amazing learning opportunity for our students outside of their regular school time and environment for social and life skills. I look forward to planning these camps with the appropriate staff at Galilee to provide amazing opportunities outside of school for our students to learn and enjoy.

School Closure Day

On Monday August 6th, Galilee will be closed for students while the staff participate in professional learning. We attempt to organise dates that will minimise disruptions to families (such as the first day of term) where possible, but on this occasion we were limited by the availability of one of the facilitators. The Staff will be focussing on Peer Observation processes that will lead to improved teaching and learning from our students. School Fees

Current statements have been emailed or mailed to families this week. All fees are to be paid in full by 7th September unless you have an approved payment agreement for 2018. We have many families who have not made any payments for 2018.

Please attend to your account immediately as the school has already paid for camps, excursions, licences and all school supplies.

Beachside Soccer

Congratulations to the sixteen boys who competed in the Beachside Soccer competition on Tuesday 24th July. They did extremely well playing three games in cold and very windy conditions. Thankyou to Tegan and Mr Coaley for taking the students.

Principal Network meeting

Today I am attending the South Central Principal Network and Deputies are invited to attend. Mrs Gerecke, Mr Martello and myself will be conducting a presentation to the other schools on how we have established collaborative teams with the staff.

At the beginning of Term Two we established a series of staff teams based around Curriculum and Interest areas. These teams meet on a regular basis and allow for a shared contribution between the staff about decisions that are beneficial for our Community. The teams have been very successful and will continue this Semester. The video below is about how Google has characterised important elements of high performing teams.

Year 2 Assembly

Assembly next week, 1 August, will commence at the later time of 3pm. Year 2 will be presenting their learning. It will be a short assembly as we are already gathering as a whole school community for students to present their learnings from 100 Days of School.

Hot Drinks

As per our Parents, Visitors and Volunteers Policy, hot drinks are not permitted on the school grounds or in the church in the presence of students by Parents, Visitors, Volunteers or Staff.

Athletics

The Dendy Athletics team trained again this week at Lakeside Stadium. It was an important opportunity for the students to practise their skills such as: baton changing, hurdling, throwing and jumping with correct techniques. Thankyou to Jess Conway for her coordination with assistance from our Staff Sport Team and Paul Mapley.
