Reflection
Besides being Catholic Schools Week this week, on Tuesday was a special day in the Australian Catholic Church as we celebrated the Feast of Mary Help of Christians.
The feast day to Mary Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. The infant church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary. The infant church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary. No priests were sent to the colony in its early days and Mass was not allowed except for one brief year until 1820. It was largely the Rosary in those early days that kept the faith alive.
Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title Help of Christians, as principal Patroness. St Mary’s Cathedral was dedicated in her honour by the Irish pioneer priest, Fr John Therry, who arrived in Sydney in 1820 and assumed responsibility for the planning and initial construction of the Cathedral. When Australia became the first country to have Mary Help of Christians as Patroness, it became the first country to have a mother-cathedral under the same title. In fact, the altar at St. Mary’s, with its statue of Mary Help of Christians, was erected as a memorial to Fr. Therry’s name.
We turn to Mary today for the protection that our nation needs, and put ourselves in her care, just as she put herslef into the care of God.
Prayer
We turn to you for protection,
Mary, the help of all Christians.
Hear our prayers and help us in our need.
Save us from every danger.
and, through your son, Jesus,
may bring you the blessing of peace and unity
to all the peoples of Australia.
We make this prayer through Christ,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen
Sacrament Dates for 2022
2022 First Holy Communion Date has been set for our Catholic students in Year 3 for Sunday 19th June 2022.
First Holy Communion
We have five students who will be receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time on Sunday 19th June at St Patrick's Church. The preparation program commence on Tuesday. Our thoughts and prayers are with these students as they develop their understanding and appreciation of how we remember the teachings and sacrifice of Jesus Christ through this sacrament.
