My Big Kitchen

My Big Kitchen is a charity that provides meals for organisations that look after people in need such as Exudos, the Salvos, women’s refuges, men’s shelters and more. They are supported by corporate bodies who provide food or money needed. They have no shortage of groups who are keen to be involved with their organisation.

Our morning group prepared a barley casserole by peeling, chopping up carrots, potatoes, celery, mushrooms and onions. For some students this was first time they had ever cooked so they had a lesson on how to safely use a knife. The soup was cooked by the permanent staff while our students decorated cookies. When the casserole was cooked, our students packaged it up into individual serves so it could be distributed. The packaging had our school logo so the recipients would know who prepared their meal.

Most of the afternoon group prepared a vegetarian tagine while some students prepared fresh orange juice from a large number of donated oranges. Again the students decorated cookies for the staff at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Many people in difficult circumstances will have a nutritious meal because of the work of our Killara Academy students. It was a great experience for our students, helping others, developing skills and having fun with school friends.
