Lifesaving championships

One current student, Lana Croker and two ex-students, Emily Alberico and Emma Croker, have been competing in the 2018/19 surfboat rowing season with outstanding results. They competed together in the U19 category at the ILS World Life Saving Championships in Adelaide at the end of last year and won a silver medal. They were selected for the 2019 Victorian team in the U19’s and U23’s and competed in the Australian Surf Rowers League Open in NSW, where Victoria came second. All three began their rowing careers doing a season of rowing at MGC.

Lhonegan Foxman at the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships

Lhonegan competed at the Australian Championships on Sunday and Monday last week. She achieved silver medals for second place in both the dynamic and balance components of day 1 competition.

We are hopeful that she will be selected for the Australian Acrobatic Squad for the World Championships next year. We congratulate her on her outstanding achievements so far.

Interschool Sport Report

While Term 2 is slowly coming to an end, the interschool sporting events have not slowed down at all. Looking ahead at the calendar below, we can be excited about 2 of our largest sporting days of the year: Term 2 Year 7 Sport Day and Junior AFL. Both days will see over 100 students representing Melbourne Girls’ College in a variety of competitive and social teams.

A reminder to any Year 7 or new students at the school, or parents, if a sporting event does not appear on your Compass page, it means that the teacher in charge is either unaware that you are participating or has not recorded your name on their list. Please be as organised as you can and email or speak with the teacher in charge of your event if you believe a mistake has been made.

If any student missed out on signing up, they will need to contact the teacher in charge directly via email or at one of the training sessions.

Regional Cross Country Championships

We wish the competing students all the best as they compete against the best long distance runners in the Northern Metropolitan Region. The reward for any top performing students is a place at the State Championships in July.

Year 8 Sport Day

Last week saw over 120 Year 8 students participate in their sport day for Term 2. Across the sports of Netball, Badminton and Soccer, our students competed to the best of their abilities and demonstrated good levels of teamwork and sportsmanship. Teachers and coaches reported good levels of behavior and effort across the whole day and our students should be commended for this.

The results were mixed with our Netball team winning their Grand Final, our badminton losing their final to University High, and our Soccer team’s result stands as undecided as they will play their final against University High School some time in early Term 3.

One of the highlights of the day from my perspective is the involvement of our Year 9 and 10 students who helped coach and umpire the teams during the day. Specifically, Kiara Ciancio Knauer, Grace Sim, Grace Foa, Abi Marsland, Annie Noble, Jamie Fukunaga, Ella Brown, Keirah Dowd, Carmen Sjoblom and Maya Blinco were all great assets throughout the day.
