Year 10 Interior Design Students solve global issue: Music Festival Global Issue

Did you know that Music Festivals generate a huge amount of waste? Music festivals operate all over the world and it has become a real issue for event organisers to deal with the waste which can be both costly to the environment and the event organisers profit margin. Although Festivals appear to be sustainable “Love, peace etc” there are some alarming facts.

Inexpensive chairs and cheap tents are often left behind generating a massive amount of waste. Designers and scientists have been trying to solve some of the issues that audiences face when attending Festivals.

As our learning task for this term we all had to create a music festival stool, that could also be put to second use such as a small table. There were some specific guidelines that we had to follow. Our stool had to be assembled/disassembled easily, sustainable, fit into a small tote bag or backpack, easily transported, comfortable to sit on and of course look great. During the process of creating our stool there where many other activities that we had to complete such as a mood board, production plan, evolutions to get ideas and reflect on our work.

As a class we had to come to an end consensus about which stool design we preferred and matched the design description to mass produce for everyone. For this process to go through, each person brainstormed, designed and created their own model of a stool that they believed would be popular amongst the target audience to take to a music festival. In small groups collaborations and consensus were made, and then an even larger vote was held between the winners from each small group. The class chose a single design. Although this design was the overall chosen design some modifications where necessary to ensure improved stability. The new and improved, three pieced stools were mass produced for the whole class.

Once each student has received their stool it was their chance to individualise it and collaborate all their ideas to create a design for their stool. Some students added some removable upholstered tops, with others laser cutting directly onto the surface, screen printing, water painting, paint or varnish.

After this long 10-week process, each student had their own personalised stool that they could take to a music festival that also had a secondary function. Everyone’s stools look great and everyone should be proud of their design that they have created and individualised.
