Introducing our 2020 School Councillors

Hello MPWPS community!

My name is Jane Kingsley and I am our School Council President for this year. Once again we have a fantastic group of parents and staff members representing you on our School Council. Over the course of the next few newsletters, we will be submitting a short intro piece about each of us, so you can get to know a little more about us. Barb and I are pleased to be in this edition!

My family: My husband Ben, sons Harry (Grade 3) and Jack (Grade 4).

My favourite thing about MPWPS: There are so many things! But if I was to choose just one - right now it would have to be our school’s wonderful culture of inclusion and compassion for everyone that is part of our school - students, staff and families.

Barbara McKenzie - Assistant Principal

My name is Barbara McKenzie (nee Springfield) and I have been the Assistant Principal at MPW PS since Term 4, 2016.

I have a daughter who is studying to be a veterinary nurse and my husband is also an Assistant Principal at a primary school (so no getting away from school stuff at home!).

As the Teaching and Learning Leader and Student Wellbeing Leader at the school, I chair the School Council Education Committee. The responsibility of this committee is to review school policies and processes and provide advice and recommendations to School Council. I also oversee the Child Safe policies and processes of the school and report to School Council in relation to this.

School Council Meeting Report

On Monday night, we held our first regular School Council meeting for our newly formed Councillors, via video conference. As you can no-doubt appreciate, remote learning and our move back to face-to-face learning this week was the main discussion topic of our meeting as Kerri, Barb and Sandra stepped us through all of the operational requirements to ensure our school is as safe as it can be, for staff and students.

As we all know, Term 2 has been a significantly different term. One we will likely never forget! We took the opportunity to voice our appreciation and gratitude for the extraordinary job Kerri and the entire team at MPWPS has done (and are continuing to do on a daily basis) to support our students through the weeks since COVID19 hit our shores. We have such a wonderful team of teachers and support staff at MPWPS, who have been truly committed to creating rich and challenging learning opportunities for every child, whilst supporting the students and families with compassion and care.

As we settle into our new school environment, our regular Committees will continue to meet. Councillors and staff make up the majority of the membership on the Committees however this year, I would sincerely hope that we could entice some new parents and community members onto the Committees as well! The meeting dates are routinely published in our newsletter. Is the Environment Committee of interest to you? Would you like to learn more about the Community Engagement Committee? We welcome everyone and eagerly await the possibility of new faces joining in, to continue to build on the wonderful work done across our school community over the last year. Please reach out to those of us on the School Council if you have questions, feedback or suggestions. In our new world of social distancing, we may not see each other at the school gates as much as we’d like, however the staff at the office or your classroom parent rep will be able to assist you in getting in touch with us to find out more.
