VCAL

As part of our Year 12 VCAL course Billy, Tayla and I attended ten continuous Mondays of volunteer work at Arcare Aged Care in Hillside. Arcare has a warm friendly atmosphere. It is located in Sydenham, which is a peaceful spot out of the city.

The tasks undertaken in Arcare included talking to the residents, playing games with them (for example bingo and dominoes) and making them coffee and tea. We made the residents pancakes in the afternoon and distributed cake and biscuits. Some of the elderly residents taught us how to knit and crochet. These are things we never thought we would be doing in VCAL! Even though we were only there for a short time, it feels like we are giving back to the community just by spending time talking to the residents. This program has given us a huge sense of satisfaction (as for some residents we are their only visitors for the week!).
