MotoGP Excursion

A strong part of Nossal’s vibrant community is the wide array of clubs available for students to join. One of the NHS clubs is the Motorsport Club, which focuses on the wide world of Motorsport and Road Cars, from karting and rally, all the way to Formula One and MotoGP. Students in this club were given the exciting and insightful experience to visit the Australian MotoGP Practice sessions in Phillip Island. The trip was arranged by Jason Bell, an ex-international 250cc grand prix racer himself, and Ruby Frost from the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.  Ms. Horner and Mr. Humphries also assisted in supervision of the Motosport club members on the day.  Jason's knowledge guided students into the world of MotoGP and helped students at Phillip Island to learn about the complex physics and engineering that goes into the incredibly speedy motorbikes used in MotoGP.

Mr. Page kindly organised the excursion and drove the bus to take club members to the circuit. Different types of motorcycle racing such as Moto2, Moto3 and MotoGP were watched and enjoyed. Students had the exciting opportunity to talk with legendary Australian MotoGP Chief Mechanic/Engineer Jeremy Burgess whose machinery has won 14 world championships. There was also a meet and greet with Australia’s first MotoGP World Champion, Wayne Gardner, who the pit straight of the Phillip Island Circuit (The Gardner Straight) is named after. Students explored the circuit and all the awesome experiences that were available for browsing and viewing, such as expos and shops from tire brands, motorcycle, and car brands to even helmet brands. There was also a simulator where students could try riding a MotoGP bike virtually (without having to pull any Gs). Overall, it was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience, with lots of information learnt while having fun simultaneously. The weather was not the best, with light showers and some very muddy conditions, but the experience was enjoyed by all!
