Monet & Friends at the LUME

On October 27, the Year 10 and Unit 1/2 French students attended the ‘LUME: Monet and Friends’ art exhibition to explore French culture. The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s display provided students with a detailed impression of, ironically, French Impressionist painters. The excursion aligned with the Unit 1/2 students’ current topic of ‘Art, Culture et Divertissement (art, culture and entertainment), providing students with valuable knowledge for their studies.

The immersive exhibition comprised a 50-minute video loop, exploring the features and inspirations of impressionism and the French painters who celebrated the art form. The showcase of the artwork was the intriguing aspect of this exhibition. The artwork was projected onto the walls, creating the impression that the colours and brushwork were alive. Paired with classical music, they were revived, producing a multisensorial experience. Sitting back and soaking in the atmosphere was all that was needed.

The exhibition provided students with multiple views of French culture. Impressionist paintings focused on capturing an unfiltered moment. Not only did students learn about French art but the French way of life that was presented through the paintings. The history and stories behind the paintings allowed students to find a deeper meaning in the exhibition. Additionally, many students participated in the drawing session, channeling the spirit of the French artists into their creations. Tutorials inspired by Monet’s artwork were provided; however, students were given free rein. Similarly, to the main exhibition, the life-sized recreation of Monet’s renowned ‘The Water Lily Pond’ allowed students to be part of the art and take some Instagram-worthy photos.

Overall, the experience was unforgettable. We learnt a great deal about French Impressionists and, no doubt, now feel a stronger connection to French culture. On behalf of the Year 10 and VCE French students, we would like to thank Mrs Sly and Ms Kentish for organising and running this wonderful excursion.
