'Pawsome Readers' Competition Winners

Thank you to everyone who entered our holiday competition and congratulations to our two winners - Balin and Gemma (both Year 7) and their 'pawsome pets'!

"This book 'A different dog' is a paw-fect book for when I have had a ruff day at work.  This book helps me relax.  I used to dream of howl I would be able to read a book like this.  I will never fur-get how fur-tastic it was reading this book.  I recommend this paw-fect book for when you are sad." Lenny (and Balin)

"Yay someone is coming over. May be if I wag my tail they will give me pats. Oh, they're putting a book in front of me - I never learnt how to read but if I act like I can then they will give me pats and I just love pats. Or maybe some yummy treats and I even get to lie down while doing it so I look even cuter and the book has pretty pictures.  I love it but I don't understand the book and I can't figure out how to turn the pages.  Oh well, I will just go back to wagging my tail and trying to get treats and pats."   Izzy (and Gemma)

Year 7 & 8 Chess Competition

After the success of our chess competition last term, we are running it again this term with both Year 7 and Year 8 students on Monday and Friday lunchtimes.  The winners of each year level will then play in the ''Champions Grand Final' on Friday 26th August.

Danielle Binks - Author Visit

Our Year 7 students were fortunate to have a visit from local author Danielle Binks recently and were able to gain an insight into her novel "The Year the Maps Changed" which they are currently studying.  Danielle spoke about her inspiration for the story, the setting, characters, and how she goes about her craft.  Students also had the opportunity to ask questions and speak with her afterwards.

Book Reviews

'Once' by Morris Gleitzman

Review by Lily A (Year 7)

I absolutely adore this book. Set in 1942 we follow Jewish boy Felix during WW2 as he tries to find his parents after they left him at an orphanage. We journey with him as he learns more about what is happening in the world, and what that means for him. I love all of the characters in this book, how much I can connect with them and how author Morris Gleitzman writes each person's personalities. This book really shines a light on good people, and how acts of kindness really do go a long way.

'The Year the Maps Changed' by Danielle Binks

Review by Mia J (Year 7)

This book shows just how much your life can change in 12 months. It's set in Sorrento, 1999. Fred lives with her adopted father (Luca) and his girlfriend, Anika. Anika is pregnant and Fred has to learn how to move forward her new step brother, Anika and Luca. On top of that, 400 Kosovo refugees come to the Peninsula. The towns life changes so much. There are so many unexpected turns plus Fred just trying to cope with growing up. I really liked this book and would highly recommend to readers aged 11 and up.

Thank you Lily and Mia for your great reviews (completed as part of the VPRC) - please continue to add your own reviews to our Library catalogue for others to see and enjoy.
