Compulsory Trial Examinations

Thursday 27 September - Friday 5 October 2018

VCE Unit 3 and 4 Examinations are a compulsory requirement for all students undertaking a scored VCE at Catholic Regional College Sydenham in preparation for the VCAA Examinations. The compulsory trial examinations provide students with timed practice in completing exams in the same environment as the final exams. The trial examinations also ensure students receive important feedback in relation to their examination preparation. Staff use these examination results to inform the structure of the revision program as well as providing information about student achievement which assists in finalising derived examination scores. The College provides scores of this nature to VCAA for this purpose. The compulsory trial examinations are an essential and required aspect of the scored VCE program.

After great success in 2017, this year, the trial examinations will commence on Thursday 27 September (please note Friday 28 September is a Public Holiday no examination will be scheduled) and conclude on Friday 5 October 2018 during the non tuition period.

Please see below for the practice examination timetable. The timetable will be available to students via SIMON and PAM. Students who have a clash of examinations will be able to reschedule one of their trial exams.

External supervisors will oversee the examinations. All students will be provided with feedback on each exam completed, with a special summative report available through SIMON providing the examination results. Staff will develop revision programs to meet the needs of students based on their trial exam result. Catholic Regional College Sydenham staff will be present at the College during the examination time. The College will be open from 9.00am-4.00pm including the Learning Common for students to access during the trial exam times. Students are required to wear full College uniform for their scheduled examinations.

Attendance at all scheduled practice examinations is compulsory for all students undertaking a scored Unit 3-4 subject. This includes any Year 11 student undertaking a Unit 3-4 subject. Students who fail to attend these examinations will be transferred from a scored to an unscored program unless a medical certificate is provided. Please note that the College verifies all certificates with relevant surgery's due to some fraudulent documents having been submitted to schools in recent years.

Other consequences for non-attendance may include:

Detentions/ Suspensions;
Not receiving an invitation to the Rites of Passage program including the Year 12 Breakfast, Year 12 Graduation and Year 12 Formal.

A copy of a letter outlining all of the College’s requirements in relation to these examinations will be mailed to all families in upcoming weeks, along with a Compulsory Trial Examination schedule and the official 2018 VCE Exam Navigator which contains the 2018 VCAA examination schedule, examination rules, regulations and special provision information.

Twilight Open Evening and Careers Expo at Catholic Regional College Sydenham on Wednesday 1 August 2018

The Twilight Open Evening provides students and their parents with vital information about course selection and pathway planning. It is essential that all students in Year 11 or 12 at the College in 2018 and at least one parent attend the evening as vital course selection information will be provided.

The following information provides an overview of the day’s events:

1.00pm – 3.30pm: Student Information Sessions and Careers Expo

Year 10 students from Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs, St Albans and North Keilor will be transported to Catholic Regional College Sydenham for the afternoon.

Students will be placed into groups and will be presented with information regarding the full variety of programs on offer at Catholic Regional College Sydenham. These presentations will provide students with information about the subjects available for study and the career options that these subjects can lead to. Students will also have the opportunity to tour some of the specialist facilities at the College including the Trade Training Centre and to attend the Careers Expo to gain pathway information.

This afternoon is designed specifically for students and will provide them with a general overview of the options available to them at Catholic Regional College Sydenham.

Wednesday August 1 5.00pm – 8.30 pm: Twilight Open Evening

The Twilight Open Evening has four elements:

Learning Area Displays in the College Hall: Families are invited to visit the College from 5.00pm to review each of the subject areas, meet with teaching staff to receive valuable advice about subject requirements and course selection. We recommend that families should allow at least one full hour in order to visit subject displays. Current students will also be on hand to provide insights into subject and course selection.
Careers Expo: The Careers Expo will provide an opportunity to research and receive quality information from our exhibitors regarding employment, apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE institutes, Universities and both Government and Private Providers. This will enable families to develop an understanding of the post school pathway options available to students and how their choice of programs will influence their future options. Exhibitors include: The University of Melbourne, RMIT, Victoria University, Melbourne Polytechnic, Monash University, Whitehouse Institute, Jetset Travel, Australian Catholic University, and Apprenticeships Group Australia.
Formal Parent Information Sessions: These compulsory College information sessions will be held in Study Hall between 5.30pm and 7.45pm on the evening.

Session 1: 5.30 – 6.15pm

Session 2: 7.00 – 7.45pm

4. Information Sessions - VET and VCAL Programs – Learning Common

This session is for the families of students currently in Year 9 / 10 who are considering entering the VCAL Program or studying a VET subject in 2019. The session will provide information about how VET and VCAL programs are offered and the requirements of these programs for students of the College.
