Sport Report

Term 4, Week 1, 2019

The Summer season has kicked off with the MCS Cricket teams playing an inter-school match for round 1. With some impressive individuals’ performances all teams put up some good scores, especially the 9/10 B’s who defeated their counterparts convincingly. Our MCS Basketballers will tip their season off this week with an away round to Blacktown. Good luck to all MCS representatives as we look to maximise our points each week whilst wearing the maroon and blue with pride.

MCS Reports

1st Grade Cricket

The Local Derby - big build up for Bullock XI Vs Bullock XI. With the gale coming in from the Western end of the ground, SGC First XI won the toss and elected to bat. Our openers – B. Handunnethithi and S Weerasingham looked the part but gave away their wickets too easily to some average bowling on the bouncing pitch. Sutton and Truman calmed the storm, with a solid knock of 24 and 34 respectively. Harrison Quinn, our young gun from Year 8 proved his selection was a good move, showing grit in his innings of 13. Some controversy, with a run out decision not going our way and five penalty points awarded to the opposition over a minor matter. SGC First XI finished on 6/119. The Second's took the pitch and must have mistakenly thought it was a five-day test, not a twenty over event. Losing only two wickets, they fell short of the total with 2/90 off the 20. A solid start for both teams, made all the more difficult given the weather conditions.

MVP: Kane Truman 34 n.o. (Donovan)

Mr S. Bullock

2nd Grade Cricket

Our boys were confident we could knock the firsts off their perch to start the season! We produced a tight 17 overs until Truman unleashed and put on 33 runs in the final 3 overs to extend the total to chase to 120. With a slow start to our innings we picked up the pace but unfortunately fell short 25 runs of 1st Grade's total. The game gave us great confidence in our ability though and we will hopefully have more experience and practice together next time we come around to playing first grade to cause that upset

MVP: Lachlan Vella (Donovan)

Mr M. Bullock

3rd Grade Cricket

A closely fought match between the two St Gregory’s College teams with some very solid batting performances and some fantastic efforts in the field. After such a strong start for both teams, the College is excited about the prospects of retaining the MCS 2nd Division trophy for yet another year. Congratulations must go to a number of boys who made their Opens cricketing debut.

Highlights: B. Ciscato with 52 for 4th Grade H. Barnett with 3/3 for 3rd Grade T. Grant with 59 for 3rd Grade J. Hogan with 2/9 for 4th Grade

7/8 B Cricket

The first game of the 19/20 cricket season brought hurricane like conditions to Eschol Park as we took on the A's. Captain Jack Spragg won the toss and elected to bowl in the boys first innings playing cricket for St Greg's. Harrison Collins and Joshua Ryan kicked off the season making runs very hard to come by for the A's opening bats. It took until their 5th batsmen and their final 5 overs for the runs to start coming, finishing the innings 6/111. Harrison Collins and Mathew Parkin opened the bat for us just as the weather seemed to take a turn for the absolute worse. Collins looked very promising hitting a quick 12 to set a good platform for the rest of our batsmen. Jack Spragg was the only one to take advantage of it hitting an impressive 53*. It wasn't enough unfortunately, and we could only manage 8/88 of 20 overs.

MVP:  Jack Spragg (Molloy)

Summer Sport Options

A reminder to all parents that students will need to complete and return the College Permission note to represent MCS teams, participate in offsite Rec Sport activities and leave offsite sporting venues.

Permission notes have been emailed to all families and can also be collected from the Sports Office and Student Services counter.

Please return a hard copy of the note. Emailed copies get passed around between College staff and do not always end up with the right teacher.

This request is to be completed for the start of Term 4 Week 2.

If students fail to have their notes returned, participation in that activity will cease.

Please do not write handwritten notes. These will not be accepted.

House Cup

As we move towards the end of the year, all students are encouraged to check their participation in all co-curricular activities to ensure all House Points reflect their efforts. If there are any areas that need attending to, please let me know as soon as possible as we look to wrap up student activities before Co-Curricular assemblies for each Year group.
