Public Speaking Competition

On Wednesday this week, Michaela Hayes in Year 5 represented our Junior school by attending the Diocese of Wollongong Public Speaking Final. He went up against 14 very talented students from the Diocese of Wollongong schools and did an amazing job! Michaela was an absolutely wonderful representative of the College who delivered a brilliant speech. Michaela’s topic for the session was ‘Is new always better?’ Michaela had not only a convincing argument but added plenty oh humour into her speech. We want to thank Michaela for representing the College for the first time at this competition and for doing so with distinction. Pubic Speaking in the Junior School is definitely growing as a area of strength and we look forward to this becoming an even stronger area in the years to come – well done Michaela!

Nature Club

At the end of Term 3 the children were very excited to get their hands dirty and learn how to plant vegetable seedlings.

Mr Stefanski and Mr Nieuwenhuis from the Senior School kindly donated kale, red onion, spinach and lettuce.

Over the past fortnight the children have enjoyed watering and nurturing the seedlings and watching their crop begin to flourish.

In the coming weeks they are looking forward to tasting their produce.

Mini Marists

What a delight it has been to join together as a Junior School to support Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse that delivers shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts for children in need all over the world.

At the end of Term 3 we started to bring in gifts to pack these shoeboxes. The students will not see the transaction that takes place for the child who receives the gift, but they felt the joy of being involved, handing over the box, knowing they had done something good to help someone in need.

We had initially aimed to pack 18 boxes, but due to the extreme generosity of our Junior School families, we are so excited to announce that we have packed close to 50 shoeboxes! We will be able to find out which country the shoeboxes land in, once they have arrived.

Thank you Junior School community!

Literacy Course

Six St Gregory’s College Staff K-12 completed the last weekend of a 33- hour intense literacy course this weekend. The College hosted teachers from other schools around Sydney. Lin Meeks and Sally Robinson-Kooi delivered the most current evidence-based research and professional development on Spelling, Reading, Writing and Grammar. This certificate course provided staff with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide instruction that meets specific needs for all students.

Congratulations to the staff who gave up their personal time for this important focus on Literacy in our College.
