Justice in Action

Supporting Afghan Girls to Keep Learning

At Wellsprings for Women, justice is not an abstract idea, it is a value we live every day through our work with women and girls who face systemic barriers to safety, education, and opportunity.

Our partnership with Maurice Blackburn on the Afghan Girls Project is a powerful example of this commitment in action.

Since 2021, Afghan girls have been denied access to education beyond primary school, with futures abruptly interrupted, from secondary schooling to university pathways. In response, Wellsprings has created a space where learning continues, dignity is restored, and hope is sustained.

Through this program, volunteer educators deliver online English classes to Afghan girls, creating not only educational pathways, but also connection, confidence, and a sense of possibility.

As one of our volunteers reflects:

“Teaching is never one-way. Learning flows in both directions… Sometimes it’s simply showing up, listening, and creating space for someone else’s voice to be heard.”

This insight captures the heart of Wellsprings’ approach: Community-led, relational, and grounded in respect.

What makes this work impactful is not only the delivery of education, but the way it is done. At Wellsprings, programs are built on trust, cultural understanding, and lived experience. Volunteers, participants, and staff work together to create safe, meaningful learning environments that respond directly to real needs.

This commitment to justice and access has recently been recognised nationally, with the Afghan Girls Project receiving the Australian Lawyers Alliance Civil Justice Award, a testament to the power of grassroots, community-driven change.

The program continues to grow, with more girls joining each term, reflecting both the need and the trust placed in Wellsprings and its partners. Behind this growth is a dedicated network of volunteers and coordinating staff who ensure the program remains responsive, consistent, and impactful.

At its core, this work is guided by a simple but powerful belief: All women and girls, everywhere, have the right to continue their education.

As a grassroots organisation, Wellsprings for Women will continue to advocate, innovate, and stand alongside communities, ensuring that even in the face of global injustice, learning, dignity, and opportunity are never out of reach.
