A Note from the Principal

After an extensive process of consultation, reflection and discussion, I am proud to officially launch the new SCHS motto: Purpose in Every Pursuit.

This motto represents far more than a collection of words. It captures a deeply held belief about what we value as a school community and the kind of young people we hope our students become during their time at SCHS.

At the heart of this motto is the idea of well-rounded development. While academic excellence will always remain an important part of our identity — reflected through the outstanding commitment our students show within both the VCE and IB programs — we also believe that education is about much more than academic achievement alone. We want our students to embrace the full breadth of opportunities available to them, to challenge themselves, to discover new passions, and to grow through a wide range of experiences.

While academic excellence remains a defining feature of SCHS, our students consistently speak about the importance of pursuing learning with intention and purpose, rather than simply focusing on outcomes. Year 9 student Aswin Manoj reflected that “there is a strong reason for each and every journey,” highlighting the way “VCE and IB [offer] various pathways you can choose that suit your needs.” This reflects the broader spirit of Purpose in Every Pursuit— encouraging students to approach their learning with meaning, curiosity and a sense of personal direction.

Purpose in Every Pursuit reflects the belief that every endeavour has value. Whether students are preparing for examinations, leading a club, rehearsing for Chorals, competing in House Cup events, participating in community projects, representing the school in sport, performing in music ensembles, debating, volunteering, or simply supporting one another as friends and peers, each experience contributes to their growth as individuals and as members of our community. As Year 11 student Arlo Icaro reflected, “In every single niche club, sport team, music ensemble, there is a purpose that drives them to excel in their chosen field.” This idea of meaningful participation across many different pursuits sits at the centre of what we hope this motto represents for SCHS.

One of the strongest themes to emerge throughout this process was the importance of approaching opportunities with intention, commitment and curiosity. As Year 10 student Tony Zhu Ren shared, the motto means “to always strive to do your best in every endeavour” and “to be open to trying new things.” This willingness to step outside comfort zones and embrace challenge is something we see every day at SCHS.

Many students also reflected on the idea that purpose is not only found in achievement, but in the growth that occurs along the way. Year 10 student Parth Bishnoi wrote that “the purpose of the pursuit is everything you’ve built along the way,” while Devanshi Shihani highlighted that “the journey is the destination” and that students often learn more about themselves through participation and experience than through the outcome itself.

Importantly, this motto also speaks to the culture of involvement and contribution that exists across our school. At SCHS, students are encouraged to embrace the whole school program — not simply focusing on one pathway or area of success, but engaging broadly with the many opportunities available. Our extensive co-curricular program provides countless avenues for students to pursue their interests, build leadership, develop teamwork and contribute meaningfully to the school community.

As staff member Karyn Kirkland reflected, purpose is often found “in participation itself — trying new activities, challenging themselves, and supporting one another along the way.” This sentiment captures so much of what makes SCHS special: students who pursue excellence while also valuing connection, contribution and personal growth.

The process of developing this motto has itself been a wonderful reflection of our school culture. I would like to sincerely acknowledge the dedication of our Motto Committee, along with the contributions of students, staff and school leaders who have worked thoughtfully and collaboratively throughout this journey. Their commitment to creating a motto with genuine meaning — one that authentically reflects the values and aspirations of SCHS — has been outstanding.

I look forward to seeing Purpose in Every Pursuit continue to shape and inspire our community in the years ahead.
