Year 2 Spotlight

Another Busy Term

Our final term for the year has been another busy term for our Grade 2 students.

Maths

This term, students explored fractions, money, and measurement in Maths. They used paper folding and modelling clay to make models of halves, quarters, and eighths of shapes and collections.

The students enjoyed the hands-on experiences of counting small collections of Australian coins and notes and exploring place value with the denominations. They also used scales to compare the mass of objects.

Another domain we focused on in Math was Statistics, where students acquired data for categorical variables through surveys, observations, and experiments. Students sorted data into relevant categories and displayed data using lists and tables.

Below are some of their examples. Students gathered information about their favourite fruit and recorded their data results in tally form. They then transferred that information and created their own bar graphs.

Writing

This term students have been focusing on the structures and features of narratives (short imaginative texts) with an importance on using appropriate simple and complex sentences to express and combine their ideas by using interesting adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

Two Best Friends

So, they walked down the rough and sandy stone steps and their feet squelched in the sand, making a squeaky sound. They then rested in the dry hot sand and made sand angels and then went towards the to make sandcastles.

Escaping Diamonds

That’s the last one Ruby thought as she flew out of the water rotating her wings to flip the water off them as she flew out of the water rotating her wings to flip the water off them as she flew towards the whirlpool.

Mayday!

“Mayday!”, said Matilda as she wildly spun off track deeper into the heart of space. Matilda was hanging with one claw, when she tried to grab her Walky Talky, it went straight past her pink nose and fell.

Then there was a big BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rocket frantically fell deeper into a deep, dark, black hole never to be seen again! Then Matilda got sucked inside an air hole. When she got there (some random place) she was standing over a volcano with billions of lava sharks!!

Ferrari Dealership

“Ok guys, let’s get a move on” says Enzo, “Okay, there is no time to mess around with money. Our car will win the race, we must win because a Ford killed my brother two months ago” Enzo sobbed.

The metal for a Ferrari was slick. It shined like the sun. They called it the Ferrari Daytona.

The race was finally here. Red, yellow, green.

The cars zoomed fast, really fast.

Enzo felt like he was going to lose.

Then the Ford won the 96 lap. One more lap to go.

The commentators said, “Oh, straight line. The Ford is gonna win.” Then the Ferrari zoomed past the Ford. He won! It was so unexpected.

The he stood on the podium in the middle and that was the start of the bestselling car in 1956. He united the Ferrari Team.

The Naughty Big Cat

“Help me! Muuuuuuuuuuu! Stop chasing me! Squeak Squeak!”

A big cat lives in a really big house with a tiny mouse and a person, but the big cat keeps on chasing the tiny mouse! “Oh no! Help me!” cried the tiny mouse. “I don’t want to be the ‘big’ cat’s lunch!” But the big cat didn’t listen, it just kept on chasing the tiny mouse!

Bo & Chichi: The Crystal Cave

One bright sunny morning on October 5th, Chichi was going for a walk with her friend Bo. Chichi was a cute, cuddly and kind cat and Bo was a small owl that was shy but had a funny humor. Chichi and Bo lived in a big spacey treehouse in a magical forest. Walking distance from their treehouse was a huge crystal cave. None had ever gone in because surrounding the cave was a crystal clear moat. An evil spirit lived inside the moat.
